Putting this question to rest once and for all.

Hi livelylinda,

Your story is very nice. I debated about giving you five or six stars. Six stars are nice, but they don't count toward points for your work. I have to say we think alike. I don't believe in the muse at all and it seems you don't either. I've also gotten no votes for things I've written. In fact, it's been years since I won a contest. Oh well, we both like writing and I'm sure we'll continue with it.

Thank you for reading, MizKat. One of my reviewers said that winning contests and getting six stars is just for the ego, and she was correct. On the flip side, the ego needs to be fed fairly regularly and the food is more 'high end' coming from someone other than yourself! But, you are right. We will continue doing what we do and hope it makes others happy from time to time. Linda

Livelylinda - yes this is a great question. After reading this I believe its more or less another one of those beautiful gifts that some have in abundance and others just have. To write is to feel, to express, to debate, to love in a way that communicates to another without literal talking. Wonderful created.

Brooke: I thank you so sincerely for reading, sharing your thoughts and leading me to my transgressions of punctuation. Would you believe that in school I always got A's in English class? A true story. Linda

I am at a point in life where I just write and am past analyzing why I write.like you stated at the end of your essay. I like your biographical imfomation about your father and your daughter. I think artistic genes do run in families sometimes. Your essay held my interest.

Why is answered here for you. How is what you need to work on next...
You have the poetic spirit of a writer.
Classes and books and reading will help too.

And as many of us here have found we write because we are better because we do. without it we are less than ourselves.

Remember stars and ratings and front page postings ar e for the ego. Learn grow and all the while continue to write and you will not only improve your prose but your self as well.

Write on

Hi Linda, I thoroughly enjoyed this essay my friend, the thing is, that you have not written it for a contest so that tells me that everything you have written here is from the heart, as for the greatest poem ever written, I am in total agreeance with you, I too put poems on here that are entries for contests, I, and lots of reviewers think it is a brilliant piece of writing and will surely win, you check out the votes and you have only received one, that is your own to try and save face! lol. As for my writing, well I write to take my mind off terrible incidents that I have had to endure over the past two years.

I think the quote about 'infinity and beyond" is from the Disney character, Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story." I remember watching it with my grandsons over and over and over.......
Glad you've given up the "whys." Doesn't really matter, but your opinion and your right to write it is what's important. Doesn't matter if no one likes it or agrees with it, but your right and obligation to state it is important. No votes? Who cares? Your opinion and right to write it is what matters.
Nicely written technically and definitely a snack to chew on for questioning writers. Good work.

I'm sorry but I think Dr. Sheldon Cooper will be no more impressed by your need to write , than he was by Penny working at the cheese cake fa tor. Lol
I too wonder about my muse, maybe it's a nice word for insanity or as you say talking to yourself.
A humorous and we'll written Essay. Keep wwriting I like your stuff.

Why do we write? It's a questions many of us ask and I am sure we all have different answers. I like your conclusions, especially the bit about it being in the DNA. For me I don't really know. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I find it frustrating. I school I hated it because my papers always came back inked in red. In the Navy, the captain asked me to answer his mail instead of an officer and then made me chief editor of the ship's newsletter. And still I don't know why because I don't feel that I have ever really be all that good at it, yet I keep trying like the energizer bunny.

An entertaining little essay that makes one think, the best kind for sure...

Infinity and beyond- that one belongs to Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story). Why do we write? I know for me the answer is simple-because I can't not write. I think some like poets perceive the world differently, Are more able to make connections, see metaphor in just about everything and are compelled to communicate our own perspective.
