Infinite Question: Why Do We Write

Putting this question to rest once and for all.

Why? An over-rated question that goes to infinity! Such a simple yet profound statement. I love it. It never really surprises me that the Bible starts, "In the beginning was the word..." It is what sets us apart from all other forms of life. Even if we cannot find the right words, we tend to doodle. It seems to be a compulsion of ours to try to improve upon the blank page. You do a grand job of it! Clearly FanStorian voters have no taste! Prophets are not often recognised in their own country!

Tony: what a fantastic review! You gave me far more kudos than I deserve, but I will take them and you have put a real big 'shit-eating grin' on my face. Thanks for reading and showering me with rose petals. Linda

Perhaps you're right. "Why do we write?" is an overrated question. For me I guess it's a sort of hobby. Maybe I'll get good enough to one day be published, if I live that long. If not, at least I can entice readers on FS with funny money and get some satisfaction when a few tell me that they enjoyed what they read.

GeraldS. Anyone can get published if you have enough money. I sent a manuscript of a book of poetry to Random House. They wrote back to me and said they would love to publish me for the tidy sum of $7,000. Or you can self-publish but never make a cent. Writing is a better hobby than a job, for sure. Thanks for reading. livelylinda

Writing is the number one exercise for writers and poets. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read.

Very interesting, Linda. I think at some time or another, each of us writers asks ourselves why we write. Pinpointing the answer is kind of tough, I think, but in some cases, we write for fun and for therapy.

A lot of us have been often and badly defeated in the game of Life and we need an outlet. We NEED fun and we need therapy!

But I don't want to sound like I'm arguing with you, Linda. I think you and I are basically on the same page, no pun intended:-)

Peace in abundance!

Mike

Nicely written.

For me writing has been like healing medicine. It has helped me to heal in my body , mind and soul. Depression has been an enemy to me for 33 years and to write helped my understand the hurts and be able to deal with those hurts.

Your beginning is perfect. It creates pictures as well as feeling, completely capturing the mind, which is the goal of all writers. :) I also enjoyed your second paragraph. Just because we think something is great doesn't mean others will. :/ If your them is "why do we write?" I wonder if it shouldn't be reinforced a bit more. Such as asking the question why a few times throughout your essay.. Idk, just personal opinion but the way it reads right now it would be better titled, "Why I/we write". Because you are *telling* us why, not asking us to look at our own motives. But otherwise a good read, don't we all think about it from time to time? :)

Since it is my essay, I am writing about why I write but including others to examine their own reasons. And, the reviewers did examine from whence their talent came and shared their responses with me. As a writer, you want to make people ponder, think and I was successful in doing just that, with one exception, you. Sorry I didn't reach you. Perhaps you are one of those people who keep digging so deeply to find something wrong, that you lose sight of the true theme. Thanks for reading. You made me think! Linda

Ok. I am truly sorry. Now I think you misunderstood me. :/ I DID think about why I write. But mostly I read why YOU write. And only later thought about why "I" write. See what I'm getting at is the *mood*. Asking a question somehow triggers my mind in a way that stating facts does not. It taps my brain, telling me I need to pull out information, not just take it in. I don't know, sometimes I have a hard time figuring out how to say what I mean! Maybe I like the question part because teacher flows through my veins. Ever try teaching a child something by only instructing or stating facts? Watch what happens when you ask him questions. If he knows the answer it will help him link what he already knows to what he is hearing. If he doesn't know, the light bulb flashes that he needs to pay attention because he actually doesn't know everything already. Ok, now maybe I just thoroughly messed up confused you with my bumbling words but I don't know how else to explain it. And I wouldn't have said a word about all these questions if your title hadn't deceived me...

Hi Linda, I read your writing with much interest. It could've been written by me. I was shy, didn't believe in myself even though when I started to learn English my teacher told me keep writing I had a literary mind, I thought she just liked me. English is my second language and I started to write after my husband passed away. Now I bare my soul, share my life, my feelings and dreams.
I certainly enjoyed your writing.

Bryana: what a great story! It amazes me how people survive hard times better when they write. Writing flushes out a lot of the 'bad' from us and leaves us room for more 'good'. And your English is beautiful. Thanks for reading my essay. Linda

This is a great piece, and rang many bells for me. Like you, I have no time for Muses. They don't exist. What does exist is one's unconscious mind. I think this is what some people call a Muse, and very powerful it is, too.

Ha ha. Good one. Why I write? OK, with me it is in the DNA, I guess. My kids are published writers, and they get that from me, not their dufus father. Now I write, 'cause it is the only creative outlet I have as my body ages, and my funds decrease. Writing is free. Except for the paper and ink, and fixing the computer. Good one. Oh, my muses...mine are all over the place, neither goddess or gods, some are not even human. I do not answer them at all. They just do the typing.

granny: apparently this essay tickled your 'funny bone'! So glad you got a couple of chuckles. It wasn't suppose to be serious but only a few have seen the humor (me, getting a Nobel Prize??? How ridiculous!) Thanks for reading, my friend. Linda

Linda;
I enjoyed your writing about why we need to write.
And I totally agree with you on your definition of why we use or why writers use the word muse. I particularly don't understand it myself, also. And you are not the only one when it comes to getting votes for contest especially if everyone doesn't vote for themselves they hardly get voted themselves anyway.
I enjoyed your small exposé on the needing to write and I am with you 100% that if I don't write it seems that I can't breathe. I am more fortunate to have another alternative in that is playing music on a guitar. But mostly I need to write.
Thank you for sharing this and informative piece of
writing for everyone to read and may the good Lord be with you always Linda.
Alex
