What a lovely story, Rama, your friend, Amma, is a very wise person, her thoughts are very insightful. I wonder if I could ever get to the stage of being absolutely selfless in what I do, our ego's do get in the way sometimes, even though we try our darndest not to allow it. Lots to think about here, Rama, and possible try to follow. I will go and take a look at her site. Good luck in the contest! xsx sandra

Even the desire to help others can become an ego-driven thing. We can do the right things for the wrong reasons. Lots of room for interesting discussion here, rd. :) Nancy

Thanks, Nancy--glad this proved thought provoking. The ego finds subtle ways to cling to itself...that's why a master (guru) is a huge boon on the path. A master shows a mirror so one can see such flaws clearly. Otherwise, we fool ourselves so easily...that trickster ego has a mastery of his own.

Hi rama devi

Brilliant. I hope many read this and the seed of compassion is sown.
I also hope this wins the contest, for that will also mean more readers.

You know, I agree with all of this. You have stated it so cearly and with such heart felt faith, it is a teaching upon itself.

My favorite bit is:
"Only if you give up your egoistic mind will it be possible to know your Real Nature. Otherwise, you will become prey to the rats of desires. If one rat happens to enter into a field, it will destroy the entire crop. Likewise, one desire is enough. It will disfigure the beauty of the Self." ~Amma

As the wheel of the cart follows the footsteps of the ox, so does the mind follw the edge of desire...live with awareness, compassion and strive on.

Thank you,
May all blessings be yours,
padumachitta

Thanks for your glowing and thoughtful response, dear friend. I am of course, not at all surprised this resonated with you, as you aim for the same ideals of compassion and Bodhisattva-activity...bodhichitta...

You could use that Ox-cart line in a poem...good one!

beautifully written my friend. The harmony is so very important as is or need to help others, That is if they truly want the help. What a great story, and so very true! You surely have summed it up quite nicely. Selflessness is where we should all strive to be!! Good writing! Liked the author's notes too to explain.

This is an enlightening piece with a very nice point. The quotes offer an air of authority, and the author's explanations expand on the ideas presented in a clear way. The only suggestion I have is to avoid using "me", "my", "I", etc., as this dilutes the concept of objective authority offered by the quotes. By presenting the teachings in an objective way (not laying claim to them as 'mine'), the reader may feel a stronger sense of invitation to claim them for himself. The concept of selfless living is a powerful one, and should be shared like this more often! Thank you for posting this!

Thanks for your enthusiastic, thoughtful and kind comments and good advice.I will take a look at the use of 'my' etc. Some people actually like it for a more personal touch, but in this case, I did not include a personal story so I think your suggestion is apt. :)

Nice to meet you, Ookami Taki...warm welcome to FS.

Is this a religion. Very interesting if it is. I never heard of it or Amma. Very moving and thought provoking message in a well written form. Great job.

thank you, Amahra...it is 'spirituality' - which is inclusive of all religions and also independent of them. So glad this resonated with you. Almost all my writing stems from Amma's teachings or my experiences living with her. :)
