Thank you for reading, kiwijenny. I can only enjoy the pictures now. Can't do any more Michigan winters due to health. But, I still do enjoy looking at all those pictures. When we knew a blizzard was on its way, we weren't upset at all. It meant a day or two vacation for school and perhaps work. We would go to the store and stock up on junk food, chili makings, hot cocoa, etc., foods that would warm our insides. The kids knew they would be able to play outside in drifts of snow and make snowmen, forts and have snowball fights. It was a holiday! But, now I can only go to my memory. livelylinda

Hi Linda. Since this is free verse I think it would be easy and improve the poem if you remove the word white here and there. I understand what you are saying but it is good to leave some of it to imagine. The addition of color was a good touch. We will be seeing plenty of White in the near future here and I dread it! Love that last stanza! That's the best part of winter. xx Nancy

This is very well written and flows wonderfully for a free verse. I thoroughly enjoyed the imagery as you paint a vivid picture of winter. I think it would be even stronger if you did not use the words 'white' so much as it starts to become redundant and there are lots of other words that convey the color without using its name. Nicely done and I thank you so much for sharing this with me.

I like the alliteration throughout
envelopes everyone - envelops
vivid descriptive detail
with strong sensory appeal
smoke from chimneys puff out - smoke...puffs out
good use of similes
love the romantic closing :-) Brooke

Very well written, livelylinda. Loved the last line. I just read two very clever poems in a row. Must be something in the air today. Enjoyed this one.

streetlights become spotlights -- Great line.

You painted a lovely picture of a wintery day, with the snow. I like the fact that you did add a bit of color with the black bark trees. In my mind I also see a spot of read as a beautiful cardinal walks on the snow looking for anything to eat. Nicely done.

patcelaw: what I remember most about Michigan winters was that once we had a heavy snowstorm or were in the middle of a blizzard, one could be almost blinded by nothing but white everywhere. The lack of color was so striking. That kind of white is what I was shooting for. But, you are right. A sudden bright red cardinal against the backdrop of white and a little black bark, it quite picturesque. Thanks for reading. livelylinda

I lived in Missouri until I was 20, then moved to California. In Missouri we had snow and ice storms. The snows were nice, but I hated the ice storms even though they had a beauty all their own. In California we didn't have seasonal change, I now live in New Mexico and we do have an occasional snow storm . Usually no more than 4-6 inches.

this is an excellent write, lively linda, you did an excellent job writing this poem about the winter scene that calls for a warm evening by the fire. I enjoyed reading it.
