Darn. I hate to see all of those poor, defenseless spindly spiders meet such a grisly fate. But, it just goes to show ya that not even six legs do any better than two when trying to outrun the Grim Reaper's scythe, heh-heh...
My kids woulda loved this even when they were small. But, then again, it's my kids I'm referring to here.
Nice, Brooke...:)

LOL. Thanks, Dean. My daughter assures me that my two and a half year old grandson likes to help eradicate any spiders they find in the house, and then he pretends to eat the yucky spiders. LOL :-) Brooke

I've always said lil' Sawyer's a kid after my own heart. And not the heart I have sitting on my writing desk, either, so don't worry, grandma... heh-heh-heh...

LOL - The other day his dad told him he remembered when he was just a baby and now he's a little kid - to which Sawyer responded, I'm not a little kid. I'm a big kid :-) He also went on a "ride" at a Halloween fair where they deck the kid out in a harness and then have him jump using bungee cords - with the help of the attendant the big kid was leaping more than twelve feet into the air. :-) Yep, he will be delighting in your horror stories soon.

Children love these backward counting poems and songs. This one is perfect for the season. Another ending could have the last spider leave an egg that hatches 10 new spiders.

I like the way you structured this, Brooke, with the countdown from ten to one poor little lonely spider who is left friendless. This delightful poem of yours reminds me of the song, "Itsy Bitsy Spider" that my daughter and I keeping singing to Jack, who is now seven months old. He takes such delight in that song, and I can't get it out of my head!

Oh the horror. . .the inhumanity!
Ten spindly spiders, whittled down to one
A traveling cluster of spiders dispatched
once leaving the webs they'd spun.
Plummeting, drowning, swatted and stomped,
poisoned by a fly the chomped
one-by-one they bit the dust
leaving just one lonely spider nonplussed :-(
Great poem Brooke - totally enjoyed it!

I think I have heard a lot more scary ones than this and maybe kids wouldn't even think it was now a days... Zombies and all everywhere- spiders seem pretty lame. But another fine work of rhyme dear Brooke Write on-Di

A fun counting poem, Brooke, and it's nice to have an adult counting poem. I like your alliteration, rhyme, and enjambment. I also liked the one who, fell into the soup.
Smiles,
Karyn :-)

Hey, Brooke,
Okay, even one spider is one spider too many! Yikes, I don't like those creepy crawlers.
Having said that, I do like the poem. Great artwork and formatting with the yellow on black.
Nice presentation. Nice work.
Cheers & Blessings

Thanks so much, Jax - the poem with spiders being killed off ought to be just your cup of tea then. LOL :-) Brooke

These are some highly unusual spidey's Brooke; they must be the special Halloween variety. cleverly written rhyming couplets presented on a sturdy iambic meter. One spider's fearful enough for me. Kenny

Belongs in a book. It is wonderful and timely. Love the imagery and the holiday. You captured the old nursery tale of 1, 2, etc and rhymed it perfectly.
Excellent.
