I couldn't agree with you more on your observations about the reality of the phony TV evangelists. I think their promise of health, wealth and happiness for a donation is easily proven incorrect both by life and the Bible.

And yet many sincere people hold the view that only good things will happen to good people. Psalm 73 is about that subject and the struggle the Palmist had in his own mind to understand. You might like to read it:
1

Surely God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.

2

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.

3 For I envied the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4

They have no struggles;
their bodies are healthy and strong.[a]

5 They are free from common human burdens;
they are not plagued by human ills.

6 Therefore pride is their necklace;
they clothe themselves with violence.

7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity[b] ;
their evil imaginations have no limits.

8 They scoff, and speak with malice;
with arrogance they threaten oppression.

9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.

10 Therefore their people turn to them
and drink up waters in abundance.[c]

11 They say, "How would God know?
Does the Most High know anything?"

12

This is what the wicked are like--
always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.

13

Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure
and have washed my hands in innocence.

14 All day long I have been afflicted,
and every morning brings new punishments.

15

If I had spoken out like that,
I would have betrayed your children.

16 When I tried to understand all this,
it troubled me deeply

17 till I entered the sanctuary of God;
then I understood their final destiny.

18

Surely you place them on slippery ground;
you cast them down to ruin.

19 How suddenly are they destroyed,
completely swept away by terrors!

20 They are like a dream when one awakes;
when you arise, Lord,
you will despise them as fantasies.

21

When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,

22 I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.

23

Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand.

24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.

25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.

27

Those who are far from you will perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.

28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.

The fog is a great topic for Halloween and also for being trapped by life's unseen obstacles. Fog is so eerie and frightening. I enjoyed your poem and the wonderful presentation, Brooke.
Smiles,
Karyn :-)

I understand this poem clearly. No fog, Although your notes do help explain the reason for the wright I think it has Merritt. Many ways to build faith. I did for more than forty years asking for not one dime. Paul made tents, I sold Insurance. Was I ever a big time preacher, no, but people were saved just the same. I appreciate your poem, Brooke, I have often wonder the same about beautiful people. My blessings

Bad things happen to good people. True but I guarantee you that God gives you the grace to endure and with strong faith to overcome many situations. I also that many conditions have been overturned that might not have been if the victims were not strong believers
Solid aabb rhymes in your quatrains.

I agree with you,life still happens to people regardless if we are good or not. Your words remind us that fate takes place
and no one earns a free pass. The late Joan Rivers made a statement that life is both the good and bad that happens to us.

Brooke;
First, I must say that this is a very well written metaphoric message to all who read this. Thank you for your authors notes it cleared up some things that made it necessary for me to dig deeper into the feelings of your writing.
Technically, of course, your rhythms meter and tempo are written very well and your rhymes are neither forced nor labored and helped with your rhythmic flow.
Which by the way, flows smoothly throughout your writing.
Your imagery, being alternatively meaningful, is very descriptive, let alone being very eloquently expressive throughout: "Be kind, be faithful,(no need for comma?) and be good--but do not think it is understood
that this will earn a golden pass from clouds of fog that fates amass." Here is where you express where money and faith in the church will help you gain monetarily.
Thank you for sharing and posting this in May all your endeavors be good ones, Brooke.

A perfect poem for Halloween - Fog is always a good medium for building on creepy feelings.

The message in your notes though, made me do a re-read, and pull out the meaning a little more clearly. As you do not often write, notes, there was an acute desire on my part to pay attention.

Fate is what it is. Sinners and saints all get their allotted due without any regard what-so-ever as to what kind of person they are. Good people get sick, get killed or get hurt by others all the time. Wrong place, wrong time. In our area, two people, a fireplace repairman, and a teenaged boy who lived across the hall from where the man was working, were killed in a turf war by gangsters) Four other people, also gangsters were killed execution style.
The repairman and the boy had run smack into fate, and it had nothing to do with whether or not they were good people. Of course they were. Sometimes, sh*t happens.

Back to your poem - I liked all stanzas, but I especially liked the close.

Be kind, be faithful, and be fair,
but even then you must beware
that fog is never ours to spurn,
nor can a pass from fate be earned

Amen to that.
Rose.

Particularly clever 8th line to make the rhyme, Brooke.

Same again 16th line.

You still have those mercenary ridiculous TV evangelists? I've always been amazed how some of the public are fooled by them enough to part with money'

I absolutely agree with your notes - there's not much justice in this world, and as for the 'meek inheriting it' - baloney!

Excellent!

Cheers, Ray xx

    If there is a Heaven similar to that they preach of, I wonder if they'll eventually get in. xx

Brooke: the TV evangelist claim you will prosper if you are good and IF you put much money in the plate for the evangelist to buy a bigger and better Cadillac, so you can do God's will comfortably. LOL This rant of yours was refreshing! I've never seen you do that and thought maybe your feathers never got ruffled. She's alive, she's alive! LOL I was also impressed with the gloomy poem, a fresh idea coming from your muse today. I enjoyed it all. Linda

Excellent. I love the poem and your author notes explanation is spot on.I really didn't think of the afterlife when I read it. I know you are well tuned into human nature and your notes show the earthly aspects. I especially agree with you about evangelists and their one sided simplistic views. Great job!
