I could start with a joke, but I will refrain. I did not know you were black,or maybe I already forgot. I, a white woman have lived in what is now the hood. Taught there too. Friends thought I was nuts. I am nuts. Hell...there are all colors down there if there is a down there. I truly do not think this is a real issue that fits into a racial group. People have become violent...hey have you watched TV? Is it higher among famous athletic figures, well it gets more coverage. I had a sister in law once...ah nice Jewish girl (NOT), she used to beat the shit out of her husband. She was crazy, and he was pathetic. What can I say. "He hits me 'cause he loves me!" What kind of crap is that? I say, go look at the bible...both additions. I know this is a rave...I had two glasses of wine. Good job.

Very cogent arguments, Lancellot. You took on popular public sentiment and logically presented your evidence to show that justice was not served.

A couple of writery things to look at:

If I walk my black butt into a KKK meeting and screamed, [and SCREAM,]

he suggested that women, know what type of man they have. [No comma after women]

He urged them not to provoke an abusive violent man. [You need a comma after abusive since you have an adjective modifying an adjective.]

This he said he was wrong, [Awkward sentence structure. Remove the second "he".]

under attack by the political correct mob, [by the POLITICALLY correct mob]

And a non-writery consideration:

Some people who were victims of domestic violence see themselves as Janay. [I don't think your argument supports the conclusion at the end of this paragraph.]

Overall, an exceptionally fine essay.

Not sure I agree with our justice system that is able to press charges against an abuser even if the victim doesn't want that. Maybe sometimes it is necessary if the victim is too afraid to speak out, but I agree that what the public wants for justice is not what should determine a punishment. Re: the Rice case, in particular....there have been many cases of domestic violence in the NFL alone. Why was this man singled out as an example with such harsh punishment? Sounds more like vigilante or mob rule. You writing was excellent on this piece and good and thorough research. Thanks for posting. It was thought provoking.

This is very powerful writing, and you make your case with conviction. True, men may also be the victims of abuse by women, but it is actually a much smaller number and I doubt that the men suffer as much as the women do when they're being abused, unless the woman uses a gun or some other weapon. I'm in a group that performs old time radio shows and in "Fibber McGee and Mollie," one of the recurring characters is a Mr. Wimple, who is frequently assaulted by his wife Sweetie Face. The audience is supposed to consider it funny, as it's a man who is getting beaten on, but for today's audiences, "'Taint funny, McGee." I'm sure you've read the stories by Evelyn Fort Stewart, who was the victim of abuse for years, although there is nothing to suggest she did anything to trigger the attacks. Many times drugs or alcohol enter into the situation and contribute to the abuse. If Janay wishes to stay with her husband, she can expect repeat performances of the abuse. To respond to a slap by knocking someone unconscious seems a bit much to me. Excellent writing, and probably a lot of men will say "Right on" to your comments. I'm not going to be so quick to dismiss the abuse. judi

Thank you very much. You would be surprise how close the numbers between men and women have become. I saw this BBC domestic violence special on abuse to males. Female abusers are on the rise. You may be able to see it on youtube

You're so welcome. You have to admit there is a distinction between a woman slapping someone and a man knocking her out. Great presentation. judi

It is a well researched and well written argument, I cannot refute that. And, I know nothing about what some black women who live in the hood want ( being a white suburbanite) but, I dont know anyone, male or female who wants/enjoys being beaten or humiliated. Jany Rice is to my mind a crazy woman....knowing he beats her and she stays with him makes her as unstable as him. I dont know if spitting is equal to being knocked out and dragged away....are there degrees of DV I wonder? It is certainly thought provoking and PC or not PC, I will probably always come down on the side of the victim. I have been the victim of DV.

I dont think you wrote it to start a riot, although you may! What you wrote makes perfect sense, its just such an emotive issue that many people wont sit down and read objectively just because. I didn't realize it went both ways. I was always told that if I was abetter girlfriend I wouldn't need to be hit, and you know I was 18 and I absolutely believed that crap. Took me a while to stop being scared and leave. I appreciate what I learned from your writing ( even if it initially made me mad!)
