The repetitions make this one I felt deeply. There have been many times I've felt life's challenges were ball and chains, but as you stated here, my Lord and savior reach out and unlocked the shackles, and set me free. Praise God.
Great poem.

Teresa;
A very inspirational and enlightening lyrics that are very enjoyable to read and I could just imagine the music as I am a songwriter myself 45 years and have two songs published in saying by Big Wedge Music.
The lyrics are spontaneous and the chorus is really rememberable or it has a very good hook (Something that is remembered very easily either the words or a melody).
Thank you for sharing and posting this for everyone to read and may the good Lord be with you always, Teresa.
Alex

Chains were leg irons or used to shackle wrist and locked around necks. This is very well written with a smooth flow of making for a good read.

Hi TAB
As I was reading your poem, (or song lyrics), I thought of this old song. After I was baptized in 76, my pastor at the time, Win Clark (now living in Indiana), loaned me one of his
favourite albums... "Only Visiting This Planet" by Larry Norman. The song that began playing in my head is called "Why Don't You Look Into Jesus?". It's one of those classic Gospel Rock songs. Have a listen, here's the link:

http://youtu.be/j6KE7mLAPug

You're writing about sin,
"This ball and chain
is weighing me down
keeps weighing me down" ... How much does sin weigh? One thing about it, if someone feels the burden, they are NOT spiritually dead. Only those who have rejected God and His Son, don't feel the weight of sin.
"This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness."Ephesians 4:17-19
They are like mules. They're used to carrying a heavy load. They're used to it. But it does slow them down.
As Christians, we can give the weight to Jesus.
"Jesus
He carried a ball and chain
weighted by sin -- our sin
He hung it on the cross
yes He hung it on the cross

Now whatever your ball
whatever your chain
give that key to Jesus
give that key to Jesus"
Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28
I wrote a song many years ago, called "Come To Me"
It goes,
chorus:
"Come to Me
all of ye
who are weak and heavy laden.
There's no need for all your troubles,
anticipating.
There's a lesson to be learned.
It's plain to see.
Listen, all My children,
Come to Me.

1. Well, if you're weak and weary,
Life's become too dreary,
You can't seem to unwind,
Life's become a grind,
You may have a migraine headache
Or a bottle full of wine,
Only thing you'll ever need
in life to make you shine.... (chorus)"

Anyway, there's more but you get the idea.

My goodness, you've inspired me. Another song just popped into my head, and again, it's the subject of your poem. It's called "Altar Call", by the late Keith Green. Here's the link:

God Bless You!

Teresa: as I was reading it, it seemed like a song to me. The repeats give it that song thing (say that fast five times). It is a lovely read and pertinent to my life for the moment. I enjoyed. Linda

It has a feeling of a spiritual song about it. Good use of metaphorical language and well chosen words to convey your message. You are absolutely right, with Christ's atonement we are redeemed from our sins and we will flourish. Enjoyable read. Faye

Yes Teresa. even before I read your author notes, as I read through your poem I was thinking Gospel Music - it had repetitive
lines that made it sound like that. Well written. Warm regards Dorothy x

I suppose that we all have metaphorical ball and chains placed on us/by us at some time in life. I have personally found that believing in myself and working towards a goal has always made me feel powerful, courageous and lighter in being. That whole sisters are doin' it for themselves thing! Nicely written.
