Brooke, that's awesome. You composed a nice tribute to your dad, telling it like it was. The man worked hard and wanted to enjoy his family, home and weekends. I'm jealous!

Nicely done. John

Cute poem. I noticed when I went to my mum's place this past week, the different variety of flowers that sprung out of nowhere in the lawn. When nobody interferes, the beauty of flowers appear and like you say, they are free. But I will be cutting the grass one more time. Then it will be up to the renter or buyer.

this is an excellent write, brooke, the imagery presented is just beautiful and tells of a father who wanted his time off to be spent with family and resting for another week.

This is a brilliant poem about your hard-working father and the nature he enjoyed. It must have been such a nice contrast to come home and enjoy the garden for him. Flowers and weeds? I don't know the difference! I like your line in your notes they are "splendid free flowers". Great poem, Brooke, and best wishes to you, Pete :)

hi brooke

I have to admit the title caught my eye
I just had to turn the page

my grandfather was a true gardener with veggies that filled an entire lot and as a child we grandchildren were his assistants with the chores as he lived with us

anyway....

and now back to your entry before us

it made me smile as I read your words of your dad
the the inside and the home/family were his garden
that brooke is far more important and measurable

your entry is very much poety

thank you for sharing your poetic talent and your dad
this was a pleasure to read

enjoy the night

ann marie, thank you so much :-) I love when grandparents and parents "employ" the children of the family to garden or cook or do any other household activity - it promotes such togetherness and empowers the kids, who are no longer just little ones who are waited on and catered to :-) Brooke

Hi Brooke

A delightful set of quatrains in excellent rhyme and meter. As I read, I imagined the beauty of your dad's garden and I had such a chuckle thinking of him 'gardening' from his hammock. Perhaps he was the spark of inspiration to awaken your deep love of flowers and nature, even what others call weeds. :))) I had the opportunity to relish in a number of gardens that look just like the beautiful imagery you convey.

... "buttercups, of dandelions and clover' ... a splendid scene well complemented by the stunning image.

A charming tribute to your dad .... I just love people who extoll the wisdom to 'stop and smell the roses, violets, dandelions, buttercups ....." :)). I'm so pleased you have such lovely memories of your childhood/life. My father wasn't a gardener either ... mum made him mow the lawn. He too worked very hard to give us a good life.
Perfection. Hugs - Lovi xoxox

Thank you so much, Lovinia, for your generous six stars, and yes, I'm sure my love of so many things stems from my childhood yard and neighborhood :-) I owe many memories and tastes and even political point of view to my dad. Brooke

    Hi Brooke

It was so pleasurable reading this almost first up. So many memories ... and I just unpacked a box and found my favourite photo of my dad.... he was so gentle, sweet and loving. He would whistle (his special whistle) each day as he came up the steps ... we kids ran to the door, always so excited when he came home. He too worked many hard hours ... except on Fridays when he came home early and picked us up from school. I was only twenty six when he died ... he didn't get to see his grandchildren .... I would have loved my sons to have known him Thank you for sharing your memories and bringing back special ones for me also. Some Fridays he would bring home a box of chocolates from the 'fancy' chocolate shop ..... guess what tastes I owe him? LOL hugs - Lovinia xoxox

I read such sad stories on Fan Story about abusive or negligent dads that it is lovely to hear such warm memories. :-)

Yes, I do too. I was so lucky to have had a gentle and kind father who loved us so much. One of my greatest regrets is that my children didn't get to meet him. They missed out on their other grandpa also.... and he was a keeper as well .... the funniest story-teller. I got on so well with my father-in-law (born and raised in Michigan) ... he loved me like a real daughter.... and I him. I can't bear to think of the torture some children (too many) endured in their childhoods. :)))

My father wasn't a gardener either, though he loved the water, he wasn't much on grass. He used to joke that one day he was going to lay down concrete and paint it green. He wasn't much of a handyman either. I enjoyed this time with you and your father. Gretchen

Oh, your father was a remarkable man! He sounds like my late mother, except she was a gardener in both sight and deed (smile). She grew her tomatoes and cucumbers, she grew fantastic hibiscus and other plants.

I loved how you describe your dad:

He grew a lawn of buttercups,
of dandelions and clover,
and violets who bowed their heads
as honeybees passed over.

While robins labored busily
to build where they'd be nesting,
my father watched them at their work
while he instead was resting,

A fantastic tribute!

Thank you so much, Yelena - this is a man who came home filthy dirty every night from his hard labor, then scrubbed himself clean and wore a suit. Work was work and home was home. My best memories of him are of him in his stetson hat and cashmere coat and Florsheim shoes, looking every bit the gentleman :-) Brooke

I don't know your father but love him. I adore the freedom of the wildflowers and flowering weeds, also. The stilted, landscaped gardens are lovely but don't take my breath away like a meadow gold with their own adornment. How do you consistently write such lovely and meaningful poetry? Wonderful piece.

What a beautiful poem and tribute to your dad, did he know that you would become doyenne in the literary realm, I really enjoyed your poem, Brooke, it was an excellent example of free flowing poetry that is a pleasure to read out loud, a poem of entertainment, your dad reminds me of me, much to the chagrin of my wife! Nice abcb rhyming, even tempo! Well done, blessings Roy,
