Very heart felt story and I am glad you can share such a great story with us. I hope that everyone reads stop for a moment as I did for the lost ones. You see I was in the Navy for 14 years and 9-11 is the day that I will never forget what I was doing or the people I knew that had lost people there. Thanks for the read and happy writing.

This is a good story about a hero that you knew personally. Too often we overlook those who are closest to us and don't realize how much they have contributed to the well-being of others.

Your story, although interesting, was repetitive about when he would drink and not drink. And it was confusing - early on you say he joined the ranks at 19 but later say, when he had a chance he joined even though he had a 5 year old. ???? I do agree - your grandfather and all firefighters are heroes.
