A profoundly wise piece crowned by my favorite Shakespearean quote; "We are such stuff as dreams are made of/And our little lives are rounded with a sleep." The ensuing verses are very intriguing. As for free will, I don't know much about that but it surely is our own imaginations that grant us our freedom. -Ekim777

Very nice, Brooke. You make this look so easy, and I know it's not. The rhythm is so good. Is this always four verses? I might want to give it a try sometime. Miss Sally

Miss Sally, thank you so much :-) Chain rhymes can be any number of verses, but this one follows the pattern of Robert Frost's Stopping by Woods, which is 4 verses with the last verse in mono-rhyme :-) Brooke

This may be the best poem I've read. You answer an age old question and take on head to head the notion of predestination. I remember the debate very well when I was at KU in Western Civ. Your rhyme is perfect, but the flow, message and depth of this one are first class.
I love how you ended with set at the end and two questions at the conclusion. Tremendous. As ever, Bruce.

I think we all have these concerns we are living our lives day to day and nothing seems to be in control, we watch the news and the world seems in chaos. Thank you for sharing this one, and the background of the original thoughts!

I knew I heard the echo of the Bard as I read this marvelous pondering.
I am much impressed with your chain rhyme, you have managed to not have a clunky or forced rhyme in the bunch.
You truly seem to rhyme as easily as you breathe.
Bravo! ( see roses be thrown on stage)
Hugs,d

Diane, thank you, my friend :-) I hate clunky, so you've made me happy :-) I like roses, but not sure I like them as projectiles. LOL :-) Brooke

Hi Brooke,
Had to smile at this, especially in the light of the latest scientific paper from the Phycisists who live in the world of quantum mathematics. According to their latest 'model' the entire universe, and everything in it - is a holographic projection of ... Well that's the tricky bit. Apparently the best they can come up with is a 'multi-dimensional universe' meaning it has more dimensions than ours ...

Thanks so much, Patrick, for your generous sixth star and thoughtful comments, not that I understand that whole dimension thing at all. LOL Brooke :-)

An old idea, brought to a stunning fresh new take on "life's a stage" The rhyming is perfect. Really like how you end this with the question: "Who'd bid me live to disappear?" Superb writing!!!! Les

Very unusual of Brooke to ask to many questions at a time. Your questions had put many minds in a state of agitation, trying to find answers. Well, I asked similar questions when I first read "As You Like It" in 1977 and up till now I have not answer those questions adequately. Well...

I have often thought that life could be just a big stage where we are played with like dolls, but then realized that nobody could imagine the things we humans dream up.
Your beautiful poem is easy to read, with strong imagery and imaginative lines.
Well done.

Bina, thank you so much, my generous friend. Miranda's dad was a professional photographer, professor of photography and photo historian - it's in her DNA :-) I could not be prouder of her, and when I have my little "talks" with her dad, who died a couple of years before she was married, I always brag on her photography :-) Brooke
