How nice to be back on Fanstory and reading your wonderful poetry.
This has a special ring to my heart. My children and I often have discussions on how life is a play with no dress rehearsals. We say that if the director isn't good the play rarely has a good outcome. However sometimes no matter how bad the writing, directing or other bit players are in the play, the seasoned actor still excels. That is why we must always act with our heart and not the directing of anyone because we all have one final review.

"If life is just a part I play,
a script from which I cannot stray,
directed by some puppeteer,
who tells me what I must obey, '

I love the spirit that is always conveyed in your writing. I look forward to your great works.
Blessings,
Cheryl

This is a wonderful poem Brooke. Life is a stage, God has produced it, but he gave us free will. We can make
a success of it or mess it up, it is our choice. The rhyme and meter are superb in this jewel but that is to be expected in any poem by you. What a great study on life. Good job. Nancy

Absolutely spot on!

Reminds me of Canadian Rock Band -Rush, who wrote Limelight and Freewill, both tracks speak of your topic/theme so very well.

Terrific flow and rhythm as always!

Love this piece...just loved it!

Ah, such wise words in poetic
and artistic form, life is but
a dream played out upon a stage
where life is never what it seems.
Such brilliant words garnered out
of the air of long ago, and still
so true, where it seems nothing
ever changes, except, maybe, dreams.
Well done

Adewpearl: I like how you connected the stage, servants, script, page, together with rhymes and Shakespeare. Shakespeare was amazing at his writing. You are inspired by a great writer and master of words. Well done and congratulations for the award!

We are made of flesh and blood. We have a heart to pump blood and give life to every living cell. But where does our mind resides. Does it dwell in the freedom and free will that we have and not bounded by what and who we must believe in?
Can we challenge the world in the name of freedom and free will and do away with the norms and traditions of our upbringing.
The world is a big stage and which part must we play in the name of freedom and free will?
Are we destined to doom from the beginning - that no winners will emerge as our body turn to ashes? In the end we will lose everything and that is the will of things for all of us to behold.
Cheerio, excellent write and well done!
Hugs, Richie. :))

This is a very nice poem, Brooke, without yet another thought-provoking message. Yes, hopefully we are not the pawns or the puppets but have control of our own lives and destinies.

Your meter and rhyme are great, per usual. You've made great use of alliteration with product, parts, played, purpose, pawn, and your use of enjambment makes for a great flow of words.

Thank you for sharing, Brooke! Alana

Troubling questions all. Your beautifully crafted poem gave me pause by its troubling content. Prompting me to respond, Something that I would really hate, is to find I'm not the master of my own fate. Loved your poem, love your poetry in general.

Nice philosophical piece with an excellent question. There really are some who believe one's fate is predetermined. I had a presbyterian friend once, and she was sure it was true, since that's what her church taught. God already knew the ones that had been "chosen" to enter Heaven and only they were saved. They tried to live their lives to PROVE it. Silliest thing I ever heard, and I think/hope they've changed this view by now.

Someone guy at a party once told me that everything HAD to be predetermined, natural disasters and crime and saintly behavior, etc. The crazy philosophy he adhered to had some complicated explanation for it, which I can't remember and don't want to.

Bottomline is there is someone somewhere who will believe just about ANYTHING you can imagine. People have the finest brains on the planet, but, like my "son" always says, "Most dogs are smarter" than most of the people he's met.

Sorry for the essay... just made me angry all over again to be reminded of how bad things really are lately, all because of insane beliefs unleashed.

Good gosh and golly - I hope I don't get drummed out of the church for believing in free will. LOL I've never paid a lot of attention to that kind of thing as far as what church doctrine is - I'm pretty sure that most congregants in my Presbyterian church believe in free will, not to mention at least some of the pastors I've known. :-) Thanks so much, Phyllis, for your most thoughtful response to my poem. As I said, that was a long time ago. The chuch was reformed in 1981 (source: web) to change the definition of predestination first proposed by Calvin.

Interesting how religions change over time, just like everything else. I remember being a Catholic back when it was a sin to eat meat on a Friday. Sure was glad when they changed THAT rule! :)

Here's more from the web on Presbyterianism, just FYI, in case you're interested:

    The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

This largest branch of Presbyterianism views predestination as a foundational belief, but it does not force followers to adhere to it, according to Douglass, a professor emerita at Princeton Theological Seminary and former president of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. The doctrine was controversial as early as the 17th century, she notes, and she believes that most Presbyterians do not focus on it; she hastens to add, however, that the belief can be a powerful assertion of God?s primacy and grace.

Well, I'm glad they're not dead set on our following it. LOL :-) I grew up on a street where most of my neighbors and friends were Italian Catholics - yep, I remember the no meat rule and going to mass with my best friend and wondering what the heck all that Latin meant. I asked her, but she had no idea either. LOL

Brooke this is a lovely poem and gives the reader quite a lot to think about. The last line, is live supposed to life?
