A search produced tin cups and a few chipped plates. I fed fuel pellets to the little Esbit stove while she tried to open the pork with a tiny military can opener. "Scheisse! I've broken a nail." She shoved the can opener toward me and thrust out her chin. "Here. Open this damn can."
*** When I was in, the army had several types of field stoves. One was huge and used inside sheet-metal stoves. Another was like the one Esbit stove but used gasoline. A third was civilian using solid fuel tablets. We had small can openers called "P-38"s that fit on key rings. I also learned to open cans with a knife. It's easy and quick if you do it right. That strangest stove I used was found in Japan. It was a glass jar of gasoline looking like that in water coolers. It dripped gasoline into the bottom of a burner right next to the glass jar. It looked dangerous but worked alright.

"Because I told her to go."
*** He-he!

Very Good, Nor. Advanced the story well. I didn't see any errors.

    I'm sure you get the interplay here. Hans won't let Schutte think he can't control 'his woman'. He had to show his manhood -- Two alpha males -- or risk the man's (dangerous) disrespect. Elsa isn't liking it one bit. She's a spoiled rich kid, down on her luck now, but used to men being the center of attention.

    I've seen those P 38 can openers. My brother (air force) had one, so I assume and think I read that the Germans had something similar. The Esbit stove to which I refer is shown in a book; part of those German "March Rations".

    Uh, a glass jar with gasoline sounds more like a Molotov cocktail. Thanks, Charlie.

Excellent story, very well run and spinning. Pauses at precise moments, nothing to add, nothing to remove. Very well. My congratulations, great job, a hug from Chile

Great chapter, Nor. In truth, I've read very little of your novel, but that was no deterrent whatsoever to enjoying the tight, dialogue-driven action in this chapter. You are a very fine writer, indeed.

This was very well written and the story line follows along nicely. I like the kitten and the dialog is great. You can easily visualize the situation and surroundings.

Nicely done. thank you!

Elsa isn't being very easy to get along with. I'm sure in a similar situation, either would I. LOL Once again you have done a great job of writing.

    Hi, Barbara. You know how it goes. Hans couldn't admit he made that coffee, could he? Not without making Schutte think he was henpecked. Schutte saw right through him, so then he had to order Elsa about some more. Thanks for your comments and review.

This mystery man is creepy, can't wait to find out who he is...serial killer? But, I guess in war, everyone is a mass murderer. The picture of that beautiful man belongs on a poster in my bedroom. lol

    Yeah, beautiful man. An enlargement of that picture rests on my desk, so I'll remember how Hans looks -- Only his hair is different. Wavy. Thanks, as usual for liking my story.

I usually shy away from political thrillers about cold war Russian stuff. I like how you put more of a human face on your characters. And I like the dialogue...very realistic.

"Here's a counter-offer: You keep the kitten, I'll keep the woman, and we leave at first light."[I love this line}

    I've got a Fanstory friend who told me in 1997, "I don't like war stories." She's now my fan. Actually, it isn't a war story, just a story set against the backdrop of World War II. Glad you decided to read and review.
