To deepwater,
You paint a very horrible and unforgettable era in the many young men that sacrificed their live for what.
For me are still fighting for prestige now; more than honor or freedom.
Very expressive and descriptive with a lot of deep emotion derived from this poem.

I was in the service, but thankfully I never entered combat! How would I cope, seeing guys in my platoon dying or dead? And of course I'd always be fearing my own demise.

Your poem eloquently shows us the meaninglessness of war and the overwhelming "after" of battles!

An emotional experience that may tempt a reader's mind to truly contemplate what lies behind the wires and trenches. It goes over a topic so popular without seeming only like another brick upon brick.

Elysium - the place at the ends of the earth to which certain favored heroes were conveyed by the gods after death. All these men were heroes. The rest more or less suffered shell shock now called PTSD.

This is a deep poem of the great fight in those trenches. The guys were so young and gave up life for what. I have yet to determine whether any war is worth the loss of life. Well penned and touching. luv jada

The War to end all wars - was a great hope, but alas, it didn't end anything. Bitter hatred lingered and would flare up again with WWII. What devastation is shown in the graphic you chose - the despondent soldier, the mud, the dead and decaying horse - with dead humans likely decaying very close by. I hope that mankind never sees the likes of that again. A great tribute to Percy Dalling, the person whom you love and remember. I pray that none of us in the free world ever forget him, and the multitudes that fought so bravely in such dire conditions.

Great poem and tribute - Very moving. Rose.

NICE POEM WITH EXCELLENT IMAGERY TO GO WITH IT. THE PAIN AND DESTRUCTION THAT FOLLOWS A WAR IS BETTER IMAGINED THAN EXPERIENCED. IT MUST BE DIFFICULT FOR THE SOLDIERS IN THIS SITUATION TO IMAGINE THE FUTURE. THE NEXT DAY IS GOOD ENOUGH.GREAT JOB!

Such a poignant image GW..I know you have said you have a military background having being part of the armed forces, so I know this subject must hit an emotion with you and it really reflects in your wonderful writings on the subject.

This poem grips me this morning as I am called to mourn these century-long fallen. The young men sent to useless slaughter is mind-boggling. To imagine a survivor, left to emerge and carry on after such a soul sucking ordeal is impossible.
