Beautiful. I loved the pace. It starts out slow and then builds, giving more emotion and tension to the piece. There is one spacing error, looks like an extra space, but other that that it's top notch.

A wonderful piece depicting a terrible time in history. My grandmother was a war bride and my mom was born in England before being brought to Canada. They both told me tales of the bombs and the shelters. I can imagine their experiences through your piece. I love the photo as well, thank you for sharing this great poem!

Shelters are safe haven(s) below - havens need to be plural as shelters are plural. People at FanStory!!! Sheesh!! So many views and still no one picked up on that simple mistake, sort of shows you what the reviews are really worth here, doesn't it, lol :)

My parents-in-law were English, and they often talked about the war. And I do believe that never have so many owed so much to so few. The world would be a different place today if John Bull wasn't such a tough character. They lived in the country, but they had people stay from London. Two children, if my memory serves.

I liked the picture you put with this poem, and the poem was very nicely presented and read poetically. Good job, Jane

what a perfect account of times of war. I would have given you six stars, but I don't have any left. Your verse made me feel as though I was there, experiencing all of those terrible things. It's no wonder you are recognized and all-time best... Very much deserved. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the history lesson.

Mankind often asks the question, "How can a god who loves us allow the madness and barbarity of war?" God who does love us gave us the freedom to choose. A freedom we desired and highly value. It is the decision of our chosen leaders to engage in the barbarism of war not God. He does not wage war against man, man wages war against mankind. So we must look to ourselves and the choices we make for the answers we seek.

Great reminder of the terrifying times the human race goes through during war time. Most of us can only sympathize and pray to God that it will some day be over.
