'fear and death' is basically what war is all about.
Excellent expression of these sentiments midst the battle, and together with your friends/comrades.
I guess you're cleverly implying today may result in this soldier's death, but then eternal peace in Heaven.

This poem captures a snapshot of a most terrible episode in the history of humankind. Yes, there were wars before, there have been wars since, but the first World War was exactly that - the First World War. So much suffering, so much misery and so much loss.

This is a nice chapter about the thoughts of a soldier on the battlefield. Gettysburg, PA is not far away and I have
visited it before as well as DC.
The shape of the poem, looks like it was in that shape for a reason, which is very nice and it goes with the poem.

As I read your poem I felt very sad that so many people have to die in wars, and this happened all through history. I thank our people that go and fight in order to keep us free.
Your poem is very well written, it was a pleasure reading it and that someone remembers the veterans.

You really show the sense of brotherhood the soldiers feel. They are all in the battle together and face the same danger. They are young, but feel the call to act bravely, as others before them have done. The narrator has to wonder if his time will come. He's seen the numbers of soldiers dwindle. Great line "as lions run with pride." In your line "You pray" you shift to second person. To keep the dramatic, personal tone, you might make that "I pray." judi

I have to admit that reading this brought tears to my eyes. I can relate because my dad fought in WW2, but every war is awful and we have to be proud of those who are willing to fight for our country. This is so very well written, and your wording coundn't have been any better. The chosen picture added even more to this. I'm so glad you brought God into this, for that's who they had with them to pray to for guidance and help. I like your reference to those who got the call, "as young lions run with pride." The last line is quite sad to think about, and it was so kind of you to add Pam in author notes. Bravo, for this read. . .Sharon
