Awe!!! This is so friggin cute and beautifully penned. Rhythm and rhymes as beyond perfect. I bet you could have won a nanni contest with this. It rolls out like a short breath of fresh air.

Thanks for teaching me what an epigram is. This really speaks volumes with so little words.
Take care, Katherine.

Dear Brooke,
This was a verypoignant and charming epigram. Unfortunately, violence is as big an instinct as hugging, but we can always celebrate that which moves to kindness and affection. Very nicely done--Ted

I sure wish that more hugging was going on in the world right now. It seems things are unravelling at alarming speed. It's hard to keep up with all the hateful, hurtful things being done by those who can't justify their actions to anyone but themselves.

Arms - unfortunately has a double meaning:
1. Arms - things which are appendages that hang off
our shoulders and those which we use to hug.
2. Arms - things which we take up to harm others.

Great Epigram, Brooke:

He who hugs is not inclined
to arm himself for war.
Instinct ought to have more say
in what our arms are for.

Just a thought to use that double entendre:

He who hugs is not inclined
to use his arms for war.
Instinct ought to have more say
in what our arms are for.

Rose.

When I look at this picture of your child (forget the grandma qualification) I am moved by the commonality we share, not just you and me, but all the people who stretch their arms and words to circle the globe.

At the tips of our fingers words linger. What an amazing woman, writer, philosopher you are!

What a wonderful thought wrapped up in four lines. I get so upset when I see crowds of men celebrating the death of their supposed enemies and wonder where they find the time to build up such hate. As you write, those who are inclined to hug are less likely to fill hatred and the desire to go to war. Unfortunately some people's instincts aren't inclined toward peace. Your expression is so powerful, and conveyed with wonderful rhyme and flow. This is so great it deserved six stars. judi

Judi, thank you so very much for your insightful comments and generous response to my epigram. I also feel that way when I see people celebrating in a party-like manner for "winning" a violent encounter. Brooke

You've very welcome. The only explanation I can think of is those people can't see any way but theirs, violent though it may be. If the women were allowed more influence in some of those countries, that might make a difference. judi

This was a thoughtful poem. I'd say let's hug and keep hugging as that is a better use for our arms than engaging in the vileness of conflict and war. Well done, Brooke.

Brooke: I had not heard of an epigram so you have taught me something this morning. I like this one, especially the play on words about "arms", human and guns. I think this is the saddest picture I've seen of Sawyer, though, and wanted to console him! Nicely written. Linda

Linda, thank you so much :-) I don't think he was being sad, just pensive. He LOVES that dog, so I'm sure he was just a tad tired :-) Brooke

Love that old "Make love not war" ideal. The poem (epigram) is light and humorous, but the message is certainly valid. Congratulations on your awards. Pete
