What an eye opening poem. A great way to start my Sunday morning. I loved the picture as well. Love how you switch the meaning of arms (weapons) to arms (appendages). Nice , nice, nice.

He who hugs is not inclined
to arm himself for war.
Instinct ought to have more say
in what our arms are for.

Gorgeous photo that makes me want to hug them both! And a very nice sentiment, well expressed. Just one thing I would find fault with...

He who hugs is not inclined to START a war, but to be unarmed for your own protection from the majority, the non-huggers of the world, seems foolish, if not suicidal to me. We all have our own licensed guns here. I hope I'll never need to use it, but I also carry a spare tire and insurance policies on our house and health. Weapons FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION are no different from a life raft on a ship. No one WANTS to need it, but when you do, you'll be thankful you were smart enough to have it. :)

Thank you, Phyllis, for your thoughtful comments. Certainly I believe in self defense. Brooke

Glad to hear it. There are too many people wanting all guns outlawed, so that only criminals will have them. Makes you wonder how they ever got thru school with those brains.

Not to mention how France and other European countries all but eliminated their own militaries for the sake of more social spending, leaving them helpless against any invader. While it was true that they could count on the good ole USA to come to their assistance in such an event, now THIS nation is cutting way back in our military budget, diverting funds to social programs (ALL of which are borrowed funds, for that matter).

Does ANYONE use their brain to do more than watch reality TV these days??? I'm constantly aware of the blatant stupidity of so many homo "sapiens" on this planet. I guess that's why I jumped on your poem for a technicality in wording. The lack of interest in defense is one of those "pet peeves" that gets my attention like a sharp stick in the gut. Not that YOU are in any way among the non-thinkers. Just my fast-draw reaction to the topic. :)

I used to wonder if I would be capable of acting in self defense if the situation ever arrived, and then my son was born. At that moment I knew I would bash anyone over the head who ever tried to harm him. :-)

YES! Kids do that to us. :)

And I thought an epigram was a really verbose telegraphy message. Live and learn.

Yes, arms are meant for hugging. Hands are meant for petting. Wait, I think I veered.

I'm with you, girl. More power.

Peace, Lee

Lee, thank you for a morning laugh after I got all somber writing that poem. LOL
Thank you also for your gift of stars, my friend :-) Makes you cry, doesn't it, thinking that all the soldiers asked to take up arms against each other were once precious little boys hugging their stuffed animals. Brooke

    I'll cry, too, Brooke.
All the precious little boys and little girls.
But you and I have been saying it for decades, my friend.

Where have all the flowers gone? Long time passin'.

I'll always be a flower child, Brooke. And I'll always be proud to be part of those moments. We lived through something very special, Brooke. All that stuff makes us who we are now. We show it in different ways, maybe. But we look at each other and recognize.

You struck a nerve on this Sunday morning. And I'm grateful. It's the way I worship.

    Peace, Lee

This is a philosophical epigram with deep thought about giving some respite to the hands away from warring. I love The thought of this short poem especially the first two lines. Very deep and true.
