Sad - collateral damage is often so well pushed that we lose sight of the real damage occurring and that is the human tragedy that people are enduring day in day out. Good luck in the contest.

'Collateral damage' is one of the great euphemisms, isn't it. Just replace it every time with 'slaughtered civilians'.

good alliteration in fire first
good consonance and assonance in still the children
your political/social commentary is spot on as it points out the way positions become entrenched through distrust and stubbornness - and the terrible consequences this leads to
