You are your own boss, for sure, and I think as a fellow retiree, it is important to keep being accountable to yourself. I was so fearful of giving up my teaching career because it had defined me for 38 years, but I have been blessed to stay busy but not stressed. I called the beginning of part 2 of my life. 8-)

Way to go, Ingrid! Excellent mechanics, of course. Perfect construction. And a fantastic reveal at the end. You're right. No one's the boss of you anymore. How empowering is that? :D Nancy

No one is more in charge or powerful than we are, blessed to create new worlds no one dears to dream let alone sktetch or bleed on paper. You are in charge, just don't let the reader know it....Stan

I have been retired for so long that I have forgotten what it was like to have power...what little I had. I enjoyed this very much and love how you find what some see as bland subjects, and turn them into fascinating and thought provoking questions. Thanks for teaching me a new word...deign...see, there is a purpose to your life!

Yep, probably explains why so many people drop dead after shortly after their retirement. I use to think what a sad prospect, but I now think it has to do with a person being so use to their jobs that they can't cope after retiring. but I can see that your not going to let it stop you and that your a fighter.

One our fellow writers had the phrase 'age-related injustice' and it stuck to me like glue. I'm trying to learn how to age with grace, Thanks.

I love this essay! Most of us who are working look forward to retirement but you bring up so many important points,we are no longer the boss when we retire. Now this free time is available and what do we do? Your writing holds the reader's interest and certainly gives me something to think about.

I recently purchased a retirement card for someone, and it had the sentiment you expressed at the end--"I'm the boss of me." That's quite a challenge. You've stated so well the thoughts that come to someone recently retired. I'd say your thoughts are more typical of the men than the women, as most women already have plenty to do outside of their paying jobs. A person's job is not his or her life. If you can help a sick child or wounded soldier, that's a lot of power. Very well expressed, and these are the thoughts a lot of people have about retirement. judi

Wow! I bet that is how Jim felt when he retired. He had been the boss for years. No wonder he went back to work. LOL This story was an eye opener. LOL Good Job Ingrid. Nancy

Men especially miss the power and expect 24/7 regard for their prestige. when it doesn't happen at home, well...

You are the boss of your future. Create a flow chart of a plan for the short term and long term. Create a balance sheet of yourself, not financial but of you, your assets, liabilities and retained powers. There is much to offer. Hell, you generated my mission statement a few weeks back. Put your writing skill out there. You are your own boss!

Enjoy the holiday... John

What I have gotten from your writing, is the sense that you will not roll over and play dead. LOL. Great piece on the down side to retirement. You just have to work your way to the top of the food chain again. But my money's on you. Great piece of writing.
