Simply stated and to the point. Sounds like a good way to review. I do the same...correct some spag (cannot do it ALL on some posts) with reasons and rules to explain, and give my general impression of the piece... seldom being critical. Style is something you can't discuss in a few lines, so stay positive where I can, and there's usually SOMETHING good in every piece.

what they have done write, or at least encouragement << You meant to type RIGHT, not WRITE, here.

I like this essay a lot as I can relate to it. Always striving and moving forward and, hopefully, improving as I go along. I have received wonderful reviews from which I have learned a lot and hope others have learned from my reviews.

Below is a misspelling which I find ironic in the context of the sentence (lol)

***************

I always, no matter the quality of the work, try to end on an optimistic note, what they have done [write,] or at least encouragement to keep on writing.

Good luck in this contest.

Jean K.

Thank you for your honesty about how much work it is to write a review. I'm also new to this site( a few months) and I never reviewed anything in my life. I went back and read reviews that influence me to buy ,or not buy a book. Additionally, I told myself to take a breath and just write what I felt without being nasty or lazy.

I'm starting to receive a few reviews that I know they're member dollar trolling; they call a story a poem and cut and paste the entire story/poem and call it a review. One reviewer recycled a review he did on something I wrote months ago for something I did this week. Please don't insult me with such nonsense. When I receive those types of reviews, I keep my self respect, thank them for taking time out to review and move on.
I've written over 20 reviews and I'm learning with each one and from the ones I receive.
I enjoyed reading your take on reviewing. It's well written.

Hi, Debbie. This is an excellent opening - immediately your reader feels connected to you and what you are saying.

I have found three things needing editing:

1) "...a month longer (than) I had." << typo
2) I think you meant to say, "...by far (not) an expert."
3) "...what they have done (right)... << typo

Your conclusion is great too. Best of luck in the contest. :)

In the piece above you do a good job of expressing your thoughts on reviewing.

With good reviews, there is no doubt a lot one can potentially learn. Unfortunately, many reviews while being a nice pat on the back, educationally are not really beneficial.

Thanks for sharing this. JW

at least someone who had been on Fanstory a month longer then [than] I had. (Commonly confused - 'then' calls for a conclusion. ie: I got up, THEN I had breakfast. 'than' is a comparison ie: I would rather have a blue car than a green one.

"I do feel much more capable of the task today, but by far an expert" (Is there something missing here? I would have thought this line might go like:

I do feel much more capable of the task today, but am, by far an expert -or-
I do feel much more capable of the task today, but by far, I am no expert (depending on your POV)

"The more I do read and review, the more skillful I think I become at it. I also find I learn more from most readings than I am able to give back in return." (Great paragraph and I concur that I learn more by reading what others have written than I do from reviews.)

what they have done write [right],

Very thoughtfully laid out and with many strong arguments about writing reviews.

Rose.

Thanks for this very nice entry for this contest. I like how this opens with a memory of the POV of a newbie: "I remember stumbling over writing my first review." This sets an overtone of compassion and empathy for those who do not yet feel confident in reviewing, and the substance of your post reveals that experience leads to more confidence, eventually--so it is vicariously encouraging.

The conversational tone and voicing style work well and feel personable. Good flow, too.

A few observations and suggestions:

*
I do feel much more capable of the task today, but by far an expert.

Not sure if you meant: "but, by far, not an expert." ???

Or: "far from an expert"?

*Of course(,) all is my humble opinion that these need to be fixed.

Good point:

With such a diverse group of writers from around the globe, words, phrases, sentence structures and meter do not always coincide with our preconceived American jargon, and who says ours is right anyway?

That's why sometimes I also add in: 'but it may be just me' - or, 'it may be a matter of diction' :)

Ditto (and well said):

As someone receiving reviews, I abhor reviewers who obviously haven't done the reading. I don't mind less than perfect reviews as long as reasons for them are given.

Ditto:

I always, no matter the quality of the work, try to end on an optimistic note, what they have done write, or at least encouragement to keep on writing.

Good luck in the contest!

Warm Smiles,
rd

Your essay is both well-written and a very interesting response to the writing prompt. When I began nine months ago I read lots of stories and poems before I decided to review. Best of luck in the contest.

This is very well stated. I like the fact that you do not review anything that you find offensive as that speaks to a high level of character since some would simply in order to bash it and then collect the reward for doing so. I have been fortunate enough to receive some of your reviews and they have always been helpful and full of encouragement. Nicely done and I thank you so much for sharing this with me.

longer then I had - than
many types of writing, finding - I would make that a period or semicolon
I agree with you - many people have good intentions, but the ones who skim read and offer generic reviews are a pain in the neck. :-) Brooke
