I find it a bit difficult to write reviews then to write a poem. Poetry is easy for me to write, but I really have to work at writing a review and I'm not very good at it. I'm better then when I first joined the site many years ago, but I have a long way to go. This was a well written article that I enjoyed reading and writing this response for... John

Thank you, my friend. I detested writing reviews at first, but that is how I learned to write poetry, so don't mind anymore. I'm sure they aren't always correct, but none of us are perfect. Take care, my friend~Debbie

Hi dejohnsrld,

This is a good essay on reviewing. But there is room for improvement here.

What I write may not be suitable for everyone and I can accept that, but if you take the time to read it, then you should review it. There is nothing more dismaying to me than to see there have been 56 views on a piece but only a handful of reviews. I have to wonder what happened to all those others who at least began to read, but then bailed for some unknown reason.

We write per genre, if that topic is not to your liking then don't read it, pure and simple. I am not into homosexual content, or vampires, or Goth, or erotic sexual "literature" or good housekeeping tips. Most poetry seems trite to me. If the subject says it is one of these than I avoid reading it. If I have somehow fallen prey to some topic I otherwise would not have read, I can at least tell the author what it was that originally attracted me to it before I condemned it and moved on.

Just my take, but surely you can see that reading and abandoning without so much as a boo is not in the reviewers best interest. ;) Chrisfiore

Good thoughts on a tricky subject. I have to agree with you, if I a subject I don't care for I just don't review it. I still don't understand people that give 3 or 4 stars and their own reason is, it's just not my type of story. Well written piece with some good insights into the thought process of reviewing. Good luck with the contest.

Very well written and agree with you throughout the entire essay. I too read the entire write because I of fear that my review will reflect that I haven't read it all and that would be embarrassing to me. Some poems I cannot understand and I'm really clueless as to what they are talking about. Those entries, I choose not to review as well. Good luck in this contest. I enjoyed reading this.

Should be went they have done right or well. I also feel inadequate, especially in types of writing I just cannot do, like scripts. Good piece, this

This is a splendid, honest account of what reviewing is about. Like all good reviewers, you highlight the need to help, to be genuine and respectful of the piece, enough to be honest and to show that you've read it closely. I couldn't help but smile at the idea that you had early on in your time on FS. I refer to that inadequacy you felt about reviewing anyone who' been here longer than a month. It takes time, doesn't it? Finding the confidence to tell Humpwhistle that he hasn't got the accent of a Sioux warrior quite right, or suugesting that Adewpearl may have a beat out of place in her immaculate meter, is not something that comes easily. Thank you for your great advice.

Yet another 'review' essay. I am really enjoying these, as I get an insight into other reviewers' style and what they look for ... they are illuminating, to say the least.

You wrote a good essay, I think you might have explored the "what should be in a review" contest stipulation a little more fully, but that's just my personal point of view.

This sentence:

I always, no matter the quality of the work, try to end on an optimistic note, what they have done write, or at least encouragement to keep on writing. -- It is not clear to me what you're trying to say here, particularly the "what they have done write," part. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution, as it might be a language barrier on my side that's holding me back.

I enjoyed your essay, and agree with you all the way.

Debbie, You have made some marvelous points to ponder. I agree with you especially regarding those people who give a review and by the comments, it's obvious they haven't read it. They are only looking for the points and membercents. It makes me angry. Great entry. Good luck in the contest. Carole

A sincere entry that touches on one of my problems- what qualifies me to be a reviewer, at least on poetry. I hear you on those who review without reading the work. It's so obvious. I'm betting their writing efforts are poor. Good luck on the contest.

I have learned so much from reviewing and would not be the writer I am today without struggling through the first couple of years. They are missing an opportunity. Thank you, my friend~Debbie
