A very significant scene of father and son bonding. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read.

Dear Brooke - a delightful children's poem, lovely images, and skillfully penned. The picture of Cutie Pie is funny - looks like he is having a blast.
Nicely done and I enjoyed the read.
Thanks for sharing.

Maureen, thank you so very much :-) Andy, his dad, has a bigger than life personality. He is a hoot with kids. Brooke :-)

What a fun and endearing way to express the simple joys of life. Surprises do happen every day and we should grateful for them. Another smile-making poem and I do believe that is one that could be turned into a folk type song. Very rhythmic and upbeat. A winner all the way. Sawyer looks like he was having fun at the beach.

Hi Brooke, this is a lovely children's poem :) I especially like the repeat line and the 'but soon...' line in each verse, kids get a feel for what comes next because of the familiarity of those lines. I love the theme of transformation and surprise... Fun and exciting. Love the pic too though I would hate to buried up to my neck in sand! Kindest regards, Debra :)

Good repeating line and interesting alliterations. Good enjambment...last stanza...have gone astray, till soon a friend is at the door. Great pictures through your well-chosen words:)

Hi, Brooke:-)
"Surprise!" is a superior poem that will delight children by calling their attention to the ordinary magic of living on this beautiful globe. It is also an example of superior poetry craft: figurative language and imagery, rhyme and rhyme scheme and meter.

surprises happen every day.

But it's never a surprise when Brooke posts a poem that I just KNOW I'm going to love, and this one is no exception.

Does Miranda take enough photos of Sawyer? He probably thinks Mom has a camera for a face! But they really are precious... what a fabulous collection and he's just tiny. You'll never run out of topics for your kids' books! And they come with their own illustrations, too! :)

Thank you so much, Phyllis. :-) Yeah, I wonder if he thinks every child spends his days posing for a photo shoot. LOL Her brother thinks she's batty. LOL Brooke

well, look at it this way.... there's good money in modeling and they always need more boys and men since it's mostly girls who go into it. he's used to the camera, that's for sure.

I like the simple way this poem paints the imagery of the way nature changes things from one small, seemingly unimportant thing into something different. A lowly caterpillar becomes a beautiful butterfly, a tiny drop of rain becomes a river.

There is a good feeling in your words. Love the verse about the raindrop finding the river bed which leads to finding the sea. Your words show how nature is full of surprises and gifts. Love the pic.
