God has made some incredible animals. Thank you for the "kiwi facts", they are such a cute little bird, and it's amazing they have survived. Here's to the plucky little bird with the pumpkin sized egg: )

This is excellent. I loved the rhyme and rhythm and the way you have presented this Whitney. I learned some things I didn't know, too. Great job!

This is not only right on in its structure, but hilarious as well. There is some zoological data that is also available within the work. Nice.

Dear Steve,
A clear winner and a great piece of poetry. I always wondered why you Kiwis had such strained looks on your faces.

Reg

Your theory would mean only females have the strained expression. Just sitting on the gint egg would be relatively pleasant...

Thanks, Jenny - glad you enjoyed.

The flying from Antarctica theory is serious - I'm assuming it was millions of years ago before Antarctica became frozen...

But why would she fly from Antarctica see a moa had say...right I'm giving up flight then?

Hey Steveh,
Funny write about a fascinating bird. I've heard they're having trouble with those damn weasels killing the poor defenseless bird. However, you brought out the funny side of the kiwi's birthing plight, well done... I see why it won. Best wishes, Bill

    Thanks, Bill.

Weasels, stoats, cats, dogs, ferrets - pretty much any meat-eater with four legs is bad news for kiwi. Before the Europeans arrived here they had no natural predators as there were no land mammals. Now they're easy targets, but conservationists are fighting back. Kiwi are thriving in predator free zones, I can take my dogs to be trained not to attack kiwi and there are plenty of breeding and release programs.

Thank God we have no foxes or snakes here, too.

Damn, poor little critters, everybody has their number. I saw a documentary on New Zealand, and its main focus was about the plight of the kiwi. It figures it was a man made problem...no body screws with the planet like we do....thanks for the extra info...much appreciated, Bill

It's easy to see why this won the double whitney contest. The flow was perfect and had a natural ring to it. I really enjoyed the playful imagery and tone of the piece as well. Excellent work overall, thanks for sharing and congrats on the contest win.

This piece meets the criteria of the double Whitney as he syllable count is each stanza is correct and each stanza has the correct number of lines totaling seven. Good end rhyming. Good eye catching photo followed by a clear message. Congrats on your win.
