God Bless you for sharing this story. May you find a big hug enclosed and gentle kiss saying Thank You for serving. I lost several friends and family members during Vietnam, and my fiance said I should stay away from him. PTDS has eaten away the identity of my cousin its horrific to watch until he decides he needs help. May God be with you and hold you dearly Terrie

Movies talk about Vampires and the walking dead, and more about characters in books I have read. Many enjoy the
macabre - shockingly repellent; inspiring horror; "ghastly wounds"; "the grim aftermath of the bombing"; "the grim task of burying the victims"; "a grisly murder"; "gruesome evidence of human sacrifice"; "macabre tales of war and plague in the Middle ages"; "macabre tortures conceived by madmen"
However, the reality of war veterans walking in an altered state: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-is ignored by many, because there is no blood or gore, the damage is the mind, unseen, unrecognized, not diagnosed, not treated, is somebody else's problem.
My prediction is that if we ever have another war, many will not be willing to sacrifice their lives for the many, receiving the gratitude of the few.
Mental health problems are not unique to those who have served in the military. Many people have stress, anxiety, mental problems, and some are psychotic. It is still a disease that people will not acknowledge as being in their family, and so unlike Cancer, it receives no Red Ribbons, no talks of treatment or cure.
Robots, maybe, but no "boots on the ground," leading to streets, paths, roads, and fields of bombs.
We must support our veterans, they who have sacrificed so much for us, and have received so little.

Such a controversial war like the Vietnam War has brought so much misery, not only to those that died, but as you described so well in your lovely poem, the ones that bear the mental scars which will never be erased. Your rhymes and imagery were beautiful, even with such a horrific topic. It flowed so well and I am sure your poem will have the effect of highlighting this big problem. Good luck in the contest. Good internal rhyming. Good perfect rhyming with win/sin...light/right...fight/might...boy/joy...head/dead...hell/well. Good homonym use with two/too. Good description and alliteration. Good simile use with like glass. Good graphic photos followed by a thought provoking message and helpful authors notes. Excellent job.

Go ahead, Dean, just tear my heart and guts out. You explore some very interesting points about how evil is condoned and nourished when in the name of armed services. Viet Nam was a disgraceful mess, but WWII was a necessary evil. Well done. Hugs, Lou

.......tear.... Just because I know about people that have went through this shit and dying. I have been there and it is not a nice place I didn't have to be there as long as a lot of the people over there that is why my heart goes out to them and their families. Dean yet you did it again great poem and the words flow very well. Happy writing and can't wait to read.

Your words are true for too many. Vietnam vets are different than those of most other wars, dealing not only with the scars of war but the rejection and often hate that awaited them when they returned home. Your poem expresses so very well their suffering. My husband served during that time, not in 'Nam, but for a year of his time in the Army, he did funeral detail. As part of the honor guard, he was sometimes cursed and spit on by family and friends of the deceased. Your poem and pictures and notes really hit home with me. Thanks for sharing.

I think this is a poignant story of a war veteran. You've brought out in detail what is and was in the soldier's mind. Very touching. You've not missed the agony of the people/fighters on the other side - the Charlies.
All lines and stanzas flow smoothly, with not a single line that seems forced. The pictures complement the poem in all its moods. Your author notes is well researched and analyses the psychological angle as well.
