This is a narrative poem, "Behind the Door," which is reflective of events that transpired during the Vietnam War. Aside from the thousand of others who died in the war, many came home with mental problems that had caused some suicide tendencies. For some reasons, the effects are too, hard to take. The suicide rates are considerable that these veterans need some kind of help to restore their normal sense of
thinking. This is one point that the writer is portraying...The pictures provided are outstanding. My sincere congratulations. Dom

Thank you for this poem and for the pictures. Your word flow and rhyming was perfect. Your message is a true but sad one for sure. It's terrible what many Viet Nam vets endure, and the world don't seem to care.

Very heartbreaking description of war and its consequences. The work is well written, rather horrid in its description of the horrors encountered by soldiers in Vietnam. Good luck in the contest.

This strikes deep, Dean, and anyone who's been in the shit has ghosts and regrets. I missed Nam, but Beirut, Desert Storm, Somalia, and Haiti have given me plenty of opportunities to do things I can't undo. This piece is heavy on the torture of guilt and seemingly unforgivable deeds done in the fog of war. Your piece is deeply depressing and sadly descriptive of many veterans who suffer with those memories. Great poem!

Thanks so much for having a look at this, Bill, and for weighing in with your unique perspectives as one who has endured similar circumstances. I too have seen things I wished I hadn't during my tenure in the Corps. However, when you're given an order, you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you'd better follow it, unless it violates the code of honor, of course...

You can't possibly enjoy something that is so explicit of a life of hell, but your poem is very skilful in bringing the subject full frontal for examination. It's a very moving presentation and the verses bring home the message... Let's hope some far-reaching effects result. At least more and more people are becoming familiar and aware of the problem and how to help these people. Well done on covering the subject comprehensively.

I love the pictures. I love the story. My brother was a victim of the Nam war. He came back broken physically and mentally. He saw and went through things that were beyond all human rules. On top of that, the people downed the ex solders coming home. Great work.

Thanks, nelliesellie, and I agree with you. The Vietnam experienced ruined a beloved uncle of mine's life. He was never able to forgive his country for the way he and his fellow soldiers were treated, not even on his dying day.

This is worth every one of these six stars...written in your signature style you have brought to the page the horror of surviving this war. Your flow and structure are impeccable as always. Your insights read as if you have lived this horror, and perhaps you have, but one way or another this is a heartbreaking read and seems to me written from the heart.

Thank you very much, J.J., and while I was too young, thankfully, to have been drafted and deployed to 'Nam, I was a US Marine and saw similar things in Iran, during the hostage crisis, and Grenada, in 1983.

I truly appreciate your review and insights. It's always a pleasure to have you stop by.

You relate the horrors of war and its after effects
so well in this poem.
Gruesome details bring the reality home.
How tragic that so many young men were ruined -
those that survived must still deal with the memories.
Good luck in the contest. Nancy
