Hi Dawn,

Quite often dreams of this sort are triggered by something that is weighing heavily on our minds, or something that we have read, or seen on TV, or heard on radio just before we sleep. Apocalyptic 'visions' often mean the opposite of what we think they presage - but, if I guess correctly, you've had a few health scares recently, so this could be simply a way of trying to get a perspective on life and where it is going.

I'd be wary of putting too fine an interpretation on this, since, to my own knowledge, we are seeing a lot of apocalyptic 'prediction' being bandied about on Facebook and elsewhere at the moment. Those that predicted the 'Second Coming' for 2000 AD haven't given up on their perpetual anticipation of some kind of cataclysmic 'Divine Act' and see signs for one everywhere.

It certainly provided some wonderful imagery for your poem.

Patrick

Hah, yes, that it did, Patrick, and I'm glad I jotted it down so I wouldn't forget it. But, that's just the point, only one other time recently did I jot down a dream I'd had, and I wrote a poem here about it too entitled, Lenore Revisited. My dreams don't usually stay with me, not even my bad ones. I dismiss them as, well, simply dreams, and nothing more. It was those cold, lifeless black eyes of the staring dove, so stark against its white feathers, that scared me most of all. It felt like peace itself was dead, or dying.

Thanks again for your encouraging words and review. I appreciate it!

I'd suggest that is not 'peace' that is dead, but something disturbing your peace of mind at the moment ...

Wonderful opening line. It really catches the imagination and makes the reader question what could follow. What a bizarre and frightening dream. I have trouble guessing what my own dreams mean so I have no clue what to say about yours. There may be some universal symbolism that could be assigned to it, but I do believe that the same symbols can mean different things to each of us. I am intrigued by the dove with cold eyes watching you cry so I'll attempt this--A stuffed bird, perhaps because without mankind for it to interact with, hope was lifeless too?

Thanks so much, Debi, and many who have reviewed this have said pretty much the same thing you did concerning the dove. With all those black, swarming birds, the cold, uncaring eyes of that lone white dove terrified me most of all. It was as if peace itself had died.

Dean: first please pardon my lack of deserved six for this amazing work. What you really believe and/or fear comes to life in your dreams in able to eliminate the psychic construction that your emotions created without your conscious management's interference. There is real energy being created in our world, our press, television etc. to suggest that we are in a deep and perhaps unrecoverable death spiral. Personally, I find it unbelievable that as a wise and educated nation, it is not so very self=evident that O'bama is the most brilliant and effective Muslim Terrorist ever born and killing this country without firing a single shot!! We trust our wishes more than our brains and our dreams try to smack us back into reality! Vance

Thanks, Vance, and sorry about the late reply. Internet woes here in our new home are driving me insane!

I think in hindsight that the dream had more to do with my research on the Chronos Bug, my new novella, more than anything else. And no sixes necessary, my friend. The fact that you enjoyed it is reward enough for me!

Dean: thanks for the reply and congrats on the new house: Best wishes and Blessings from afar....BTW: WHERE ARE YOU LIVING NOW?
reply by the author on 10-May-2014
Still in Ohio. We were just able (finally) to get into a larger home. It's out in the boondocks, but I kind of enjoy it that way. I can walk right out my back door, into a massive field of wild flowers, and watch the sunrise. It's beautiful, and very inspirational, too.

Good for you Dean! I've lived in Youngstown, Columbus, and long time in Cincinnati, then Australia ten years and now Vegas. Small world!

Yes, it sure is. I grew up near Dayton, Ohio. I went to Vandalia Butler High school, and the University of Dayton...

Hello there, my friend! Because I was not permitted to comment on this piece - I upgraded my membership! That is how I valued your works.

As of your dream, I guess you're too occupied with the thought of END OF DAYS! Too occupied that it moved to your subconscious. You either fear for your salvation or for the salvation of your loved ones that it may caught us unprepared.

Everyday, we keep trying to be the person God wants us to be and yet we are surrounded by temptations that made us fall short. However, God is constantly assuring us.

"And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." 1 John 5:11-12

That's what I think. It is a very scary dream. c", Mae

Hey, what a compliment, daeneam. That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me since I've been here, I think, that you upgraded your subscription to reply to my work. I am truly humbled...

I am a very spiritual and religious person. I attend church regularly, on Sundays and a bible study men's group on Wednesday evening. I love to read my bible, and do so at least once a day, more when time allows for it. My pastor is a fabulous man, a well learned man of God, and that is why I asked him what the dream had meant. He said pretty much the same sort of things that you did. He feels that God gave me the gift of writing, and He is trying to convict me to use that gift He's given me to praise Him through my writing. Help others, promote my Christian faith...but I've always been leery of coming off as too preachy, and have never felt this is the proper type of forum in which to promote my own religious agendas. But, perhaps I'm wrong, and that is what God has wanted me to do all along. I don't know. What I DO know is that I will continue to seek my answers through prayer concerning this...conviction. He's never failed to give me an answer yet!

Thanks so much for your awesome review and compliments, daeneam. I'm very grateful.

I get you. Some people are intimidated when we talk about faith and religion. You have a creative way of describing what you believe and I give you two thumbs up for that. Cheers! c", MAE

Maybe the dream was telling you of something that could happen, but not necessarily will happen. I think the dove is a sign of hope, and that despite leaving this world, even if it is destroyed, we can find happiness in the hereafter. That's just my personal take on this. Dove's are quite peaceful.

Thanks for weighing in with your thoughts on this one, Linda. Those cold, black, doll-like eyes against its stark white body terrified me most about the dream. It was almost as if it were saying, "All peace and hope has died."

The contrast between the black bird and the dove was outstanding, a metaphor and symbolism of great depth and beauty. The power verbs jumped out at me and made me feel as if I were sucked through a window and suddenly saw what God sees and then the man returns with beads of sweat and knows its not to late to find God's grace... Wonderful.

A wonderful and powerful poem. I can't interrupt nothing but the word of God so all I can say is that the dove does represent peace after a major storm. Something could be going on currently or will happen and as long as you keep God "amiss" peace will always remain throughout.

Fabulous writing.

This dream can be interpreted not on a personal level but a general one.
Everyday, mankind is destroying the world and this fear that we are going to bring our Earth to a deadly end can manifest in our dreams.
Global warming, pollution, nuclear destruction, contamination from radioactivity, destruction of the environment and the ozone above - all adds up to a horrifying end.
Coupled with our mind set of the dark forces at work, the dream culminated to the end of our beautiful world.
But in our hearts, there is HOPE and the white dove represents love and purity in our hearts which will somehow awaken mankind to do the necessary to save our blue marble from destruction. Though that white dove appeared to be a stuffed animal, it can become real only when mankind have the courage to halt the destruction of our beautiful world and let the doves fly freely.
Great write and well penned a dream of destruction.
Cheerio, best, Ritchie. :))

Thanks, Richie, and that's a very thoughtful interpretation. I have been doing a great deal of research for my apocalyptic story, The Chronos Bug, and I've read some pretty horrifying things, and not fictional, either! I just wondered why all the birds? Bird flu, perhaps? I suppose it could have lodged in my psyche somewhere...

Thanks for your kind words of encouragement, my friend.

    Hi Dean,

Some things in life are so horrible that we wish we have not seen or heard about them, smiles. Have a great day and week ahead.

Here's a story, bathed in horror,
Hitchcock left a solid link
Poe's reflection, death's infection
skies as dark as Bombay ink

Could there be a smile hidden
'neath the dove's determined stare?

Hah, what an excellent, poetic response, Norbanus. Perhaps you should lengthen it a bit, and post it as a poem. It'd probably do very well!
reply by Norbanus on 06-May-2014
I was working on a longer response and intended to post it, but I was interrupted. Yours is certainly worth the effort.

Great poem, Dean. Definitely a strange dream, that's for sure. I don't think this has anything to do with your dream but in the Bible, when it speaks of end of days, there's a part where God is going to allow all the fowls of Heaven to feast on the flesh of all the wicked just before he dumps them into hell. Rev 19: 17, 18. Maybe we're closer than we think. Great piece, D. Have a good one.

Ah, you're right, DS, I'd completely forgotten about that! Maybe all that research I've been doing on biological warfare and genetic weapons has gotten to me after all.

Thanks for reminding me of that verse. I think it has some significance, perhaps.
