'Just the sand in my eyes'...what a lovely, haunting line. I can't imagine very many young men know what they're doing there, once they get there. As you've said...the enemy could be friends, under different circumstances, in a different time. Lovely, blessings....

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing my poem. I do appreciate your feedback. It can be hard at times to tell who is the enemy. At other times, easy to imagine how people we are supposed to be fighting could be friends under other circumstances.

Fantastic poem, you tell the story so well, what are we doing, is anything making a difference, this isn't how it was meant to be. Your poem flowed well with so many fabulous lines it's hard to pick one. 'Soldiers don't show pain or even fears It's just the sand that's in my eyes' so poignant. MaggieF

The poem speaks for many veterans alike. No one knows what war is like, but them. The poem tugs at my heartstrings, because the depiction doesn't sound easy to the mind, body and soul. A tough job to undertake, and it's something we all will always commemorate. Happy Memorial Day. Congratulations on the win.

Thank you for reading my poem and for your kind comments. It is true what they say. War is Hell.

And it is a good resurrection my friend. I'm sure most of our fighting men feel that way. It is a sad situation that we continue to have wars when nobody really wins. But they say when good men decide to do nothing evil will win. God bless our military and their families who sacrifice so much. Well done. Nancy

Thank you for reading and for your feedback. No, in the end, I don't think anyone wins in the end. But there are some battles that have to be fought.

thank you for sharing this poem again. It is well worth reading. It reminds us that soldiers go where they are told, and they have to leave so much behind. They face danger every day, and never know where or who the enemy might be.

Well done,
~patty~

Thank you for reading and for your review. The worst part is definitely not knowing who the enemy is.

This is a very interesting piece. It ha a very nice rhythm. I thought I was reading a religious piece then you wrote

Is she still waiting or has her life moved on

Then I thought maybe this is a soldier and it was confirmed as I continued to read you were. It's a lovely piece. Well done. Good job and good luck.

Thank you for reading my poem. I appreciate your comments. Yes, a soldier questioning the meaning of where he is and what he is doing. And why.

A very well-written spiritual poem. Many soldiers fight and make war because they are told it is the right thing they should do for their country. When they are there they see the truth and know it is not right.

Thank you for reading and for your feedback. I think all soldiers, at some point, question what they are doing and why.

Thank you for re-posting this poem. As you know by now, I don't review much poetry here. Nothing personal. I just don't feel I can help anyone with my poetry experience.

Your poem moved me, though. I was in the military, but between wars. Too late for the Korean, too early for the Vietnam war.

The most cogent lines:

Humvees with bullet holes through their doors
Smell of new paint and death in the air ["New paint" sets up a dramatic tension with "death in the air." ]

Great job, my friend.

    Jay,
Thank you for reading. I know you don't read or review much poetry, and I always appreciate your feedback. I was, unfortunately, not too late for Vietnam so I didn't use Humvees. But I thought people would relate better with a more recent "police action". Or whatever they're calling it. I kind of wonder if, with the line you mentioned, people understand that "death in the air" is the smell of it. No napalm this time.
    Thanks again for your review.

Have a memorable Memorial day. I was thinking of going to Walmart and trying out there new lawn furniture, heck I might fire up a grill and cook some hotdogs!

I am speechless. This is the most beautiful piece I have read on this site to date! It paints a glorious yet somber portrait of the sacrifice a soldier makes. This is written in a wonderful surprising way that jolts the reader. This was an emotional trip but well worth the read! Bravo ! A hauntingly beautiful piece. Well done. Please Write on!

Thank you very much for reading my poem and for your generous review. I was never in the desert, my war was in a jungle, but I imagined the feelings would be similar.
