Thank you so much for reading my poem and for your very generous review. I'm glad you enjoyed my effort. I think many soldiers have questions and doubts about why they are in certain places and what they are doing there. For me, it was in a jungle, now it is in a desert but I think the sentiment would be similar.

Well said. Thank you for this wonderful tribute for our military men and women. I'm sure they are wonderful about the true motives of their daily sacrifices so far from home.

Thank you for reading my poem and for your review. I appreciate your feedback. I believe most servicemen and women posted to areas of conflict begin to contemplate the reason for why they are there.

A brilliant piece of work! No wonder you won the contest. Congratulations! This is a serious concern; how is war ever going to bring peace or set things right? How helpless is a warrior; to maintain all toughness when everything on the inside is shaking him up!

This is a good poem. I like the title and how it plays in with the end of the poem.
I hope to God, we don't have any more wars -- I know that it won't happen but I can wish.

This is a great homage to soldiers - it really seems to get inside their experience - particularly for those who serve in the Middle East. It has a real feel to it - not caricatured like so many poems about veterans My nephew served in Iraq and commented how disturbing it was that the locals were so afraid of him - your fifth stanza captures that feeling as well as the sense of the soldier always having a part of his mind back home.

Thanks for this one!

Not surprised this was the contest winner.
What I like about it is the vulnerability.
Thoughts of the Holy Land and its history make for an awesome read as this soldier battles with his conscience and his own fears.
You have given us an insight into how it actually feels to be there. Your descriptions of the vehicles, the beggars ( who may be something else) and the pain of separation from home.
God bless all of those in service and well done on a remarkable poem : )

As the son of a Naval Vet and grandson of an Army Vet from the first war, this would bring a tear to the she's of who lost.
I lost a son in...
"The War of Life" but won the battle as he saved four with His organs.
A nobel sacrifice for this holiday.

This speaks and views the duty and commitment of a soldier, a conscious of sin stands on duty like Jesus unlike anything of mighty Jesus, not to confess lies but play silent; I liked.
