What lovely visions your poem throws up, Sharon. I was in Tasmania in 06 and 07... loved it, and have wonderful memories of the holiday. Did you originally live in Tasmania? Because it sounds like you have memories of your father on the beach. Loved it, Giddy

Thank you so much Giddy! I'm actually a Queenslander by birth, but my parents moved to Tassie after I left home, so I'm very familiar with it (as is my warm blood!) But I can appreciate its beauty, even though I have to wear five layers!

Beautiful memories of child hood. How blessed you were to be with of your father on that beach,
I specially loved last stanza
I still feel his hand at rest upon my shoulder
ablaze with love enough to warm this whole, cold beach--
giving
one little girl
a forever world
of
dimpled
afternoons
reflecting deep affections.
Thanks for sharing.

Free verse that is truly free. Beautiful descriptions of the ocean and your father standing there. Love the use of: "Saturday children & Saturday husbands" which represents a day off with such wonderful lines as:
"heading for home
as butterfly boats glide, silent, spinnakers set,
rainbow-bellied with the racing tide; skiffs skipping by
lollipopped houses licking sugared miles
and curves of cream-with-coffee sands ..."
Awesome!!!! Les

An excellent poem about the beach - I like the lollipop house image! It seems to paint a timeless picture too, although beach holidays have been around only for a few hundred years in the UK so I learned and were initially medicinal. I really like this! Best wishes, Pete :)

Hi V...
~ What a lovely recall of your father and special times now past... Very touching at the end,and the pix has a nostalgic feel to it...
~ Easy to see why it was recognized...

What beautiful memories of times spent with your dad. I especially love "I still feel his hand at rest upon my shoulder ablaze with love enough to warm this whole, cold beach". So much comes thru about your relationship in these few words. How blessed you were! Wonderful poem! thanks for sharing it.

This Cold Beach.' You speak of a country I guess was once known to you, reminiscing about the good old days gone by. I didn't know it was already that cold down under. Well done.

I did enjoy your fond memories of your father on that beach he used to frequent, now full of lovers and children playing on the beach, with young mothers holding hands with Saturday husbands, the boats going back to the cozy lollipoped houses. Yes, you recalled that day your father loved to watch this cold beach with his arms over your shoulder, enough to warm the dimpled afternoons of once a little girl. An excellent write indeed.

Welcome back! That time when your father's hand gave you dimpled afternoons to warm the cold beach certainly have not left you as you still see with the eyes of a child, this poem literally visions of sugarplums dancing in my head. Lollipop houses licking sugared miles, butterfly boats...and let's not forget the sound of enchantment. The lines beginning with soft ripples are stippled...exquisite. Always stay near water because it is your home. A six if I had not cast all mine to sea days ago.
