Yet another beautifully written piece of poetry rich with descriptive images conveyed through precisely selected word choices. The photos accompanying this poem are precious allowing the reader to see how children view the world with a sense of wonderment, taking delight in all the world's creatures. Great use of repetition in the first and final stanzas with the line "and then, there is the ant." The repetition of this specific line allows it to take precedence in the poem and provides for a stronger impact on the reader. I especially love the way the writer describes the attractive attributes of various animals throughout this poem. My favorite lines are "the peacock is pizzazzy, and the rainbow blooms of jellyfish are positively jazzy". These types of word choices make the poem fun and lively, while supplying the reader with details about each creature. The rhythmic pattern woven throughout this piece, creates the upbeat tempo with which this poem flows. The use of alliteration in peacock/pizzazzy, cackling/crows, and humongous hippopotami to name a few examples, is obviously evident in every stanza of this poem. The meter of this quatrain poem is solid and consistent creating a nicely cohesive unit of poetry. The tone is light, lively and informative in a fun and interesting manner. An exceptionally well written and formatted quatrain.

There is something about ants that attract children.

A nice pleasant children's poem, perhaps good to read out at bedtime.

Interesting, concise and visual. Eloquently written, as we come to expect from your pen. Good luck.

:) mel.

Ants are awesome! They're insanely strong, and like you mentioned they help the soil, but most of all, they're voiced by lovable neurotic funnyman Woody Allen :) Just kidding. What's not a joke is how talented you are and how glad I am to be able to read your work again, Brooke. Best of luck in the contest, thanks for sharing.

Your poetry is always so well done and heart warming. I think of my youngest son who is thirty-six now. One day when he was 3 or 4, he had a magnifying glass and burned himself on his bare foot while trying to burn an ant. I asked him,
"What are you going to do, if in your next life, you come back as an ant? And you crawl up some little boy's foot?" Now, as a man, he sees no reason to kill anything. Fact is, he and his family are vegans. It is interesting how things turn out. Sorry about the rambling. Your poems always bring memories or experiences I've had with my children or grandchildren. Best wishes.

Don't be sorry about the rambling, Victor - it always touches me if something I've written triggers memories in one of my readers - it means so much to me to connect on that level :-) Brooke

What a nice ode to the ant. I have always loved the ant. It's the most energetic creature on the planet. There's working ants and army ants. I don't like to kill them unless there's an infestation. Sawyer is really getting tall.

amahra, thank you so much :-) Yes, Sawyer is tall and lean. He started off much smaller than most babies in our family, so I'm thrilled he is so tall and healthy :-) Brooke

The humble ant is tiny and yet such a fascinating and annoying insect.
This series of descriptive and vibrant quatrains is full of energy and life.
There's so much to captivated and entertain yet still sometimes the ant
Is more fascinating than most.
Clever and thoughtful and a very worthy contest entry.
Good luck.

This light hearted children's poem is delightful. It skips along with excellent cadence and rhyme. The alliteration platypus/plant, peacock pizzaazzy. The contrast between the exotic creature and the ant brought more than a chuckle to my day... I am still laughing! The photos of Sawyer help tell the story of the ant.

Good fun rhyming in this one Brooke. Very colorful and full of imagery. The problem with the wonders of the ants is that if you find one there will be a hundred that are close by., lol And some of the larger ones bite and they are nasty. Behind a glass enclosed is the best way to observe their busy life.

good luck in the contest

It's amazing what catches there eye and attention. Even the littlest ant will emit a vibe saying, "hey, kid, come look at me." Those are cute pictures to accompany your poem.

John, thank you so much. Yesterday it was a baby goat at a petting zoo - his little body was shaking with excitement. LOL :-) Brooke

Funny you say that. My wife is in Florida this week visiting. Yesterday, my son Rob, the two little ones and grandma went to the zoo. Aiden was so excited anytime an animal got close by.
