Hi Brooke
This is a delightful poem with terrific rhymes. Any child would love this one. Right away, it reminded me of that old American hymn, "All Things Bright and Beautiful", by Mrs. Cecil Frances Alexander.

"All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

2.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colours,
He made their tiny wings.

All things bright ...

3.
The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
God made them high and lowly,
And ordered their estate.

All things bright ...

4.
The purple headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning,
That brightens up the sky;â??

All things bright ...

5.
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,â??
He made them every one:

All things bright ...

6.
The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water,
We gather every day;â??

All things bright ...

7.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell,
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

All things bright ..."

You have some nice alliteration,
"platypus and plant"
"crocodiles and cackling crows"
"whale's the wonder"
"peacock is pizzazzy"
"watch it work"
"polliwogs and puffins"
"humongous hippopotami"
I like the repetition of
"and then there is the ant"
What can we say about the ant? You've hit in right on the nose... "the ant is an annoyance"... if they stay out of my house, I will be a happy camper.
I like your newly-invented word, "pizzazzy", and the rhyme with "jazzy".
Your conclusion, the ant works extremely hard and yet goes unnoticed. Some of God's creations don't have to do anything to be noticed. Perhaps it's the same with people.
Nicely penned!
I like the pictures of little Sawyer, but I hate ants!
your fan,
Kimbob

I've always loved that song, Kimbob :-) Thank you so much for your generous and attentive response to this poem. Yeah, ironically, I stomped on an ant an hour after posting this. LOL :-) Brooke

Hi Brooke,

Very cute and always well-written entertaining poem. Abundant use of alliteration and enjambment make your words flow with ease highlighting the plight of one of those squishable little "annoyances". Nice personification too!
Good luck in the contest!

All the best, Rodger

A bloom of jellyfish, well there is something I've learned today. I expect a little boy like Sawyer could get down and really see the workings of an ant which must be fascinating. I know a lot of kids have ant farms. The poem is better than a haiku to capture this important moment of education in Sawyer's life. Giddy

I learned it today, too - I Google so many things when I write a poem, so I was looking up jellyfish, and there it was! LOL Thanks so much, Giddy. I mentioned to Miranda that 23 months is probably a bit early for ant farms - I think he'd end up tossing it and having ants all over the living room. LOL :-) Brooke

Thanks so much, Linda - he and Miranda usually take about a twenty minute walk each morning - yesterday he got so caught up in sighting ants and declaring to his mother, "Look, ants" that the walk took an hour. LOL :-) Brooke

This was a delightful poem and the pictures show that kids see things we, as adults, ignore. The rhyming was delightful. Overall a great, descriptive children's (adults will enjoy it too) poem.

On a scale of one to ten, you just advanced the ant to about a five, made it interesting. Ha ha.

The whale's the wonder of the sea,
the peacock is pizzazzy,
and rainbow blooms of jellyfish
are positively jazzy.

I'll be expecting to see pizzazzy in Webster's next version. A great word.

Whimsical, fun and delightfully, delicious alliterated in all stanzas. I'll bet Sawyer loved this one! And nice pics...though FS display makes them a bit fuzzy.

Enjoyed all the alliteration, but especially:
with platypus and plant,
with crocodiles and cackling crows --

the peacock is pizzazzy,

jellyfish and jazzy :)

The daffodil in frilly skirts - nice echo of IL sounds

LOL-
the ant is an annoyance.

*
Who has the time to watch it work
at making soil more fruitful
when we can gawk at butterflies,
if we are being truthful.(?)

polliwogs and puffins --nice!

LOL-
humongous hippopotami --

Good repeat of this phrase for a great closing;
and then there is the ant.

Enjoyed the bouncy beat and fine quatrain style rhymes too.

Love,
rd

yes, the larger picture size combined with pictures from a smart phone camera doesn't make for the sharpest photos :-) I used the larger size since there are four frames
thanks so much for your thoughtful review, rd :-)

Really enjoyed this one. Loved the way you viewed the lowly ant against a bckdrop of other more popular creatures. The is a fascination with the behaviour of ants (when they remain outside). Once again, you have matched the picture so perfectly.
