What an accomplishment Steve!!! I loved reading your crown of sonnets and can see it is a 'labor of love' for those who complete them. I have read the two that are in the contest and am awed by the work that is put into them... and now your outstanding piece. Did I read it right... this is an example and you will edit it out and replace it with another for the contest? I can't wait!! Such good writing and your light handed, humorous touch is always a joy! Well done!!

Many thanks, Melissa. This was actually an entry in a contest nine years ago, but I have revived it now, partly to publicise the upcoming contest and partly to reassure myself that I am actually capable of doing this!!

Why don't you enter?! I am sure you can do it too!

Oh my, Steve... the amount of work and fortitude to create such a wonderful piece of literature is a bit more than I can give at this time. I am considering writing a Pushkin sonnet sometime soon. I was talking to Helen about it today. Its lengthy but doable. :). I can't wait to read yours! Melissa

I am sorry I missed this the first time around, but glad I caught it this time. My WQ is 387. I guess that's not bad, right. Of course, I believe only true wisdom comes from God.

Thanks, Barbara. Not too much serious about my crazy WQ idea, although the underlying premise is sound I believe - those who have lived long and varied lives are more likely to achieve wisdom.

Wow. What a heroic effort.
You kept my attention and interest the entire poem and even made me smile several times at your observations.
Excellent form. Keeping up the required meter for that long is a challenge and you met it beautifully and made it a pleasure to read.
Thank you for reviving this. I missed it the first time.

Thank you for your kind words and the lovely sixth star.

This was a bit of fun written at a time when I obviously had more time and more energy to tackle such a challenging task. Glad you enjoyed.

This set of sonnets is thoughtful AND amusing and perhaps something the loudest of the youngsters ought to think deeply about. Guess I come in around 197 with your math formula. The third degree is hard to prove since I never finished student teaching. This is an interesting concept here: My proposal is that no-one who is not Kish-Plus should be allowed to stand for Congress or Parliament and anyone wishing to be head of state should be at least double-Kish - that should knock out pretty well all current heads of state. Of course, you could go the other direction and point out what we learn from young people. Children, for example, have a tendency to be happy every day (or nearly so) in spite of whatever is or isn't going on. If only more of us were satisfied with crayons and coloring books, we might have a greatly reduced prison population, for example.

Hi and thank you for reading this epic and even completing the calculations to find your WQ

Of course the thing is skewed to ensure that I have a good result. I suspect Monsieur Binet would not approve!

As for children being wise, maybe you have a point!

    Cheers.

I enjoyed reading and doing your Wisom test. I know I don't qualify for the wisest, because my scare is 292 (I think). You did a great job, and I hope many people take the test. I am curious who is the wisest also. Then you'll have to wonder who likes to stretch the truth. Shirley

Wow, Shirley, you read that quickly! Add a few points to your score! You probably finished reading it before I completed the editing of the notes where I calculated my new score as 400! Of course the system is deliberately devised to favour my particular circumstances...

You are the second reviewer so far to actually reveal your calculated WQ I'll have to check back through the reviews it got first time around to see who else was brave enough to publish their results.

    Have a great day!

Taint me. I'm sixty-five short of you, and I think this to be all BS anyway, according to my IQ of 129. I found the math quiz more interesting than the meal served as your entry.

I thought it to be a trap. Am ah-ha moment. A test to see how many dupes actually calculated the mess. Inventive.

This is an epic write Steve and I think I need to put my feet up and have a cup of tea now after reading (Just Kidding). If we had to take a test for all these activities I think we would all fail miserably and never learn anything, never go anywhere, never have children, never work and never marry! I once ought a book of IQ puzzles and I was useless at it. I think I shall stick to writing poetry and forget the rest. A fun post and I am interested to know everybody's score now, love Dolly x

Hi, Dolly. yeah, these things are epic. I'm girding my loins to tackle this next one. So far I have got just the germ of an idea which conveniently breaks into seven sections.

IQ's are interesting aren't they. I have always been good at these tests. My high school entry cohort completed one and I know my teachers viewed me with some sort of respect until they discovered what a lazy little toad I really was, despite the high score.

Of course, with all the wisdom I have since accumulated, I know IQ tests in general are largely meaningless.

You didn't post your score! What's the use of that? Send it to me in a message if you want to keep it quiet...

This is a very good philosophical look at how to succeed in life. It is a lot of good fun and a darned good entry into the Heroic Crown of Sonnets contest.
I like the way you use flow and enjambment. Thanks too for the lesson on how to add up one's score. I think I'm well below the Kish. :o(
This is an excellent life's lesson as well. I was so pleased that I think I know which president was killed and which one quit - and yes, I lived that long ago.
Exceptional skill here.

Rose, thanks for the wonderful review and the six stars and congratulations again on your win. I think I always knew that humour wasn't going to win this contest, although I was still a little disappointed to be languishing so near the bottom of the voting.

I can assure you it had nothing to do with the quality of your work. It's hard to know which way the winds will blow when we write to a Contest. Sometimes humour will win the day and sometimes dark and heavy gets it. I believe the measurement comes from the collective mood of the various submissions.
This time, the Gods were smiling on me. There have been times, when I've been pissed on and been told it was rain.

Hi Steve,

Your line "No need to learn of history, you were in it" seems to be a needless departure from not only iambic pentameter, but also logic. There are three syllables in HIS.TO.RY, whereas HISS.TREE is just a noisy tree with two, the female being MISS.TREE and both are a MYS.TE.RY to me. And to say "history, you were in it" implies or even states you no longer are in it.

I humbly submit that these issues could be rectified with the following change: "No need to learn of history you're in it"

Otherwise I find this mammoth piece of work BRILLIANT. Well done, Chris.

I'm not the wisest fanstorian, but I'd be interested in knowing how that goes. LOL I enjoyed this walk through wisdom and its light-hearted style. You have created something both entertaining and interesting. Well written and good reading material. I enjoyed.
