This came at the perfect time to read! We have had a five hundred year worst drought - BUT the last two days have been pouring rain. Slickers don't fail me now!

I wish I had a six for this, Brooke, I smiled through all of it. I did wonder what a bumbershoot was and glad to see it is an umbrella. LOL This is just so delightful and I enjoyed it so much. Blessings

I am pretty sure umbrellas and raincoats will not work when you're playing in water puddles, but I am equally as sure that it's not as much fun if you're not playing in puddles. I loved your poem.

when bumbershoots and slickers fail

I like the use of this phrase, pretty cool, I am going to try that. Very easy flow and even easier to read. The mind of a child, or a writer tapping into his/her imagination. Awesome, really great piece here.

nice write...

Adorable poem and picture. I can only imagine the antics of the day had there.

Too funny! Two funny!

The beauty of word play when children play is so magnificent!

Good Morning, Brooke
I've never heard of bumbershoots, but it sure dresses up that repeating line. I ask myself why an umbrella and a slicker would fail in the rain...all I can imagine is that it was a very heavy rain, one of those rains that Forrest Gump described when he was in Viet Nam, fat rains and sideways and even straight up from the ground!
"I'll find a puddle where I'll sail
to places where I've never been" ... My friends & I always played in the puddles when we were kids. And if there was a little stream running down the hill, we'd race our popsicle sticks. What do you think of this slight change to avoid using "where" twice?
(I'll find a puddle where I'll sail
to places that I've never been)
I like this line,
"as seas replace the solid ground,
who knows? I may just spy a whale." ...it reminded me of our whale watching cruise when we visited Saint Andrews (by-the-sea). There's a little hint of Noah in this verse, and I picture Sawyer standing on the deck of the ark.
"Now that would make one whopping tale
for me to tell as I grow old --
when bumbershoots and slickers failed,
I sailed the seas so brave and bold." ... this is what kids do so well. They imagine all sorts of things that adults have lost the capacity to do. What adult would race popsicle sticks from mud puddle to mud puddle? What adult would imagine that a worm was a whale?
"Perhaps it only was a worm
that wriggled by with plumpened tail"
Your delightful message, of course, is that
"anything is possible" when it comes to imagination.
A wonderful poem! Thanks for sharing.
I hope that worms aren't far away, because I saw a dozen robins the other day. Yet, we still have two feet of snow here, and the temperature is -21C today! They're a bit early.
your fan,
Kimbob

Thanks so much, Kimbob. If you've ever seen the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang you've heard the word at least once before :-)
Yeah, I had a robin visiting last week, but now tomorrow night we're due to get another foot of snow. I've had it, my friend. I'm looking into robbing a bank and buying a private island in the South Pacific :-) I really appreciate your lovely comments and generous rating. The site isn't going to let me nominate you for this one because they haven't switched their reviewing clock yet :-) Brooke

I really enjoyed this piece, Brooke. Really wish I had a six left for you. This work really captured the magic of being a child when it rains, to me. Nice job.

Had I six stars they would be yours. Another adventure into the big world of splendor. Whales, sailing the seas of Captain Hook. Wow , such a moment for young Sawyer. Well done Grandmother. Blessings

Good use of the abab rhyme scheme. Good end rhyming. Good perfect rhyming with fail/sail...tail/fail. Good alliteration with to/tell...sailed/seas...brave/bold....was/worm...wriggled/with. Good complimentary photo followed by a clear message that flows well.

Absolutely delightful. Reminds me of Seattle's rainy day, nights, weeks, and months. I don't miss it but I am sure you needed it. Hope you dry out soon.
