Now that would make one whopping tale
for me to tell as I grow old --
when bumbershoots and slickers failed,
I sailed the seas so brave and bold.

I've learned something new today and that is bumpershoot!!! This is a great modified quatern girl and a wonderful little story.

Love the quatern, it just flows with magic. Aw, wish Sawyer was with me last time I went to Hermanus and watched the big whales frolic in the sea. But it was before his time. This is a lovely poem, Brooke. Really enjoyed the read. luv jada

Jada, thanks so much :-) He's been to the beach a bunch of times but not out on a boat like that yet. He has so many great things to look forward to :-) Brooke

So rain was a fairly new experience for Sawyer. I can imagine he would love splashing in puddles, of course Miranda right with him, and little bit too. Great poem. God loves you and so do I.

Thanks so much, Janie. He is still warming up to the idea of getting wet. He loves his bath, but water from the sky is a horse of a different color. LOL :-) Brooke

This is absolutely adorable. Love the the rhyme..made me want to march in line and sign it. I've seen that Calli has gotten quite a bit of rain...feast or famine

Melissa, thank you so much for your generous response to this poem. Yep, this is the first rain they've had in 8 months. The last time it rained was so long ago Sawyer wasn't really old enough to appreciate it. Brooke :-)

Now you have that innocent little man telling tall tales. I'm guessing a bumbershoot (love the word) is what we boring old people know as an umbrella. Enjoyable. Kenny

What a whimsical, wonderful poem for children, highlighting their incredible imaginations, Brooke! Bumbershoot is a term I first heard in the movie Mary Poppins, I believe. Anyhow, I digress...

This was excellent, should be in a children's book of poems for all to enjoy!

Maybe that's the movie I'm thinking of too.

    You're very welcome, Brooke!

Haha! I was going to ask what a bumbershoot is but you beat me to it in your author notes. Makes sense that it would be an umbrella with chute in it. I love your imagination. My favorite part is where you talk about sailing in a puddle. Excellent meter and rhymes throughout. Enjoyed the punctuation, especially the Emily- like dashes :) always get a kick out of your modified forms.

Thanks so much, Joy. Watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with your grandsons if you want to hear bumbershoot have its most famous moment. LOL I'm so glad you enjoyed, my generous friend :-) Brooke

I am old enough to recognize the word "bumbershoot" The poem is great I love the rhythm and the rhyme, There seems to be an inborn connection between little boys and rain! Great job on this adorable poem.

this is very well written, brooke, I hope this reply is able to go through. that is a cute picture of the devices needed to stay dry in a storm. my friends and I from college went walking in the rain one night and got soaked, but just loved walking in the rain and wind. campus police told us to get back to our dorms because there was a tornado watch in the area and our dorm mother was having a fit

Thanks so much, sweetwoodjax :-) I remember when I was a kid and we would go swinging in the rain. Now I think about the metal poles and wonder what kids are thinking! LOL :-) Brooke

Thank you, Brooke, for the introduction to the term bumbershoots, which sounds like an English or Aussie name for the 'brella.

Another nicely pithy piece for a rainy day.

An unbelievably minor thought:

to places where I've never been, (that I've never been)

There's probably nothing between the two but personal preference.

It's actually American, Dave, and dates back to the 1800s. The Sherman brothers wrote it into a song in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which makes lots of people think it's a Brit term, but the Shermans are American and so is the word. LOL I had family members who used lots of old-fashioned words, so I grew up knowing this one :-) Thanks for your review, my friend :-) Brooke

Ah, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a favorite of my youth, and a character that rivals the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz in the quotient of scarydom...the Child Catcher!
