Perfect meter and delicious rhymes make this a real pleasure to read out loud. I also really appreciate the metaphorical message, and certainly can relate to it.

From an entirely meteorological point of view, some warming in Ontario right now would be very welcome. :)

Av, thank you so much :-) Some warming in PA would be lovely too - we have another major snow storm on the way. Brooke

"But I have also known the days
when raging waves receded..." These two lines are specially meaningful to me. Such a pleasure to read your work again. Best wishes.

What cool picture to complement your poem which is in fine form as per normal. Strong images make this a good read. The sea as a metaphor for our emotional state and/or life's ups and downs is very well expressed here. The sea is an amazing place to be. Signature fine rhyme and meter give the poem a very smooth unlike the sea, except for when it is flat and motionless and slate black as glass and any disturbance is immediately swallowed and disappears as if it had never happened. (Am I the only one to have failed your class on rhyme and meter?) Tone is a tad somber but the message hopeful: the storms do end, the seas calm and a new day is always on the horizon. Like this one very much. Virutal six and an A+ for you. Good luck in the contest...

Hello Brooke,
This is a wonderful entry for the contest. Your descriptive wording, solid meter and rhyme, lends itself to fury of the pounding sea and the damage that may ensue. I appreciated your optimism at the end, with the thought of warmer days to come, (a problem of a different kind, here, out West). Good luck with this piece, and best wishes, Bill

Life's ups and downs, and lately, the weather's ups and downs. We had thunderstorms last week, right after inches of snow had fallen. It was really crazy, but at least the rain got rid of tons of snow. then, of course, came the flooding! So I think we're all looking forward to warmer storms.

Your quatrains flow so smoothly, and the rhyme is perfect, as always.

Hi there Brooke, this allegory on life is beautifully penned. I think the metaphors you create out of sea, storm, beach, sun etc, manage to grasp some of its very essentials. I have always been fascinated by beaches, a focal-point for water, air and land, in a way, for life itself, and enjoy spending time there;
The rhyming works very well, and so do the, enjambments (You see, I am not that bad a student:-)).
Good luck in the contest, and all the best, Olof

Brooke, the ebb and flow in this poem reminds me of the subject, which is probably your intent. The imagery is excellent and the rhyme and meter are perfect as always. Congratulations on your award. No one is more deserving.

Brooke, what a wonderful poem for the contest.
It rhymes and flows well. I like the thought of
even if there are storms we know better days are
ahead. Good luck in the contest.

I smiled reading this as yet more snow falls outside. The first green shoots of daffodils are pushing through and like you, I know the days will soon be warming.

A most enjoyable poem with excellent end-rhyme, Brooke. receded/unimpeded is great.

Best of luck in the contest.

I hope you win. Storming/ Warming has a good flow about the rest of the lines. It is also a very nice and very thoughtful way to end such a weathered write.

I, for one have had enough storms this winter to last several years. I want spring to jump out of bed, ASAP!

I've had enough for several years, too, Dusty :-) We both deserve Bora Bora weather for a long while :-) Thanks so much. Brooke
