Steve,
Absolutely wonderful. The rhyming, within & ending. Great alliteration throughout, so much fun to read and definitely complimented by the picture. I love O. Henry too. A sure winner of the contest. I loved it. Namaste, Debbie

Wow. You made him come alive, through the excellent rhymes and lines of your wonderful story poem. I could see him finagling another cot in jail. I could see all the good souls cutting him loose, for the holiday. And then, the light dawns, he's going to repent, and again, lands in jail.
Fun and cute, and probably more true than we can ever imagine.
Excellent.

Oh, I did like this one, not all the best ones had been written, Steve, this is so good and just in time, I see. I do love this type of story, it is a real story in a poem, lots are not. Good luck in the contest! xsx sandra

    Thanks, Sandra.

Yes, I see other entries that may have fine poetry but they are far from being strong 'stories' which I am sure is what the judges are looking for.

    Have a great day.

kiwisteveh: you've done a wonderful job writing about Philosophy Jones. It has been years since I read O.Henry. You have inspired me to take another peak. Great job here and I believe six star worthy but will have to be virtual today. livelylinda

    Thanks, Linda.

The story was called 'The Cop and the Anthem' - easy to find online if you want to read it, but be warned O. henry never used one word when a dozen would do. His character was called Soapy.

    Thanks for a wonderful review.

Hello. This is a well written entry. It travels along well and keeps up the rythme and rhyme. The picture is good as well. I have the othr pome on the tip of my tongue, or rather like an unheard earworm...

Good use of the abcb rhyme scheme. Good end rhyming. Good perfect rhyming with fingers/lingers...bed/fed...failed/jailed...well/cell. Good internal rhyming. Good alliteration and description. Good storytelling. Good complimentary photo followed by a humorous message.

Terrific rhythm, delightful internal rhymes, skilful touches ("the broken and broke"), and through all of this, a great story! Tremendous work, my friend.

And who says all the great stories have been written? Nothing like cutting the legs out from under an aspiring story writer!

I believe Damon Runyon also copped from this story when he named a principle character Sorrowful Jones. Another homage to the great O. Henry.

It's all here, Steve. An interesting rhyme scheme, storng rhymes and meter. O., and a story.

Peace, Lee

Oh, all right, I suppose a writer of your inventiveness can still create something fresh and new - I was talking about us lesser mortals!

I've been reminded that the original story was called 'The Cop and the Anthem' and the original character was Soapy....

He either gets arrested or he dies. Maybe he joins a religious order. Lots of twist potential with this set-up, Steve. Beautifully written, an I like the variously tabbed right margin lay-out. Excellent, sir. :D Nancy

Thanks, Nancy - O. Henry was a genius at plot twists One of my all-time favourites is 'The Ethics of Pig' - gotta love the title for a start. I reckon it would make a marvellous movie - if I could, I would tackle a screenplay and send it to Spielberg...
