This was a well written poem. I loved the message of this poem. The poem reads well. The lines,
Talent is
unlimited
when instinct is the teacher
really closes out this poem well. Nice job.

Seren, thank you :-) I think at this beginning stage of painting children are a bit amazed to look down and see the colors where they didn't used to be :-) Brooke

This is such an adorable poem. We need to let the artist loose within all our children. I like your last line,"when instinct is the teacher". Great work.

This is an excellent poem Brooke and your words are so true. My wife has had poems that our son wrote when he was about 10, framed and hanging on the living room wall for years and he just turned 41 last week. Take care. Bill

Bill, I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one like that. I have framed drawings by my thirty-something kids hanging in my living room :-) Thanks so much. Brooke

Your Welcome!

I never thought of it like this, but so accurate is this description of the creative process. If you really want to see art just give him finger paints. Kenny

We get to see Sawyer growing up in these pictures. You should make a book of these poems and pictures to give to him when he graduates or gets married. It would make a precious gift.
I enjoyed your poem.
Even teachers keep a few of the pictures and cards made for them by the children in their classes.
Well done.

This is a very true statement. Clearly, in all the artistic forms, sometimes the best painting, poem/writing or music is struck with the spark of instinct and emotion. Well done.

Thanks for the poem and the shout out, Brooke. I have several drawings and colorings inside my Bible from my six grandkids. My refrigerator is covered in all sorts of artwork. Thanks for sharing.

I'm getting to be a big fan of your poems connected to your grandson's pictures. Sure, this one connects with him, but I suspect it's as much a message of life as a anthem to his childhood creativity. As a teacher for forty five years, I know what you say is correct. Sadly, children's self esteem is modified by interactions and ego dimunition over time. The once free spirit artists of finger paint and clay, conform and draw more accepted images, or they give up saying they're no good."Talent is
unlimited when instinct is the teacher".....this is a beautiful way to acknowledge the need to let people just create and react to their emotions and environment. I think that our best poetry and prose comes from a similar place.

Thank you, mfowler. That is exactly what I mean. Every child is a Picasso at two. By the time they're ten teachers have sorted them out and told a couple they're talented while they've told everyone else they're not. I still remember the very short list of the "artists" in my elementary school class. Brooke
