This is when you are at your best! A ture life incident or story pulls out the best in you. Your style of words and how you let the realities sink in are memorable. Now this will effect my sleep.

For disturbing your peace of mind and sleep, I'm sorry. but wherever there is was, atrocities occur and are somehow minimalized. with your cultural background, this ha to have shades of psychic memory. Thanks for the stars.

A story of terror and determination. You're right, Ingrid. People pushed to the limit of their endurance will do pretty much anything to survive. Excellently done. :) nancy

War is such a horrible thing, the things humans will do to another human being often goes beyond belief. Good but sad story. God loves you and so do I.

This is a terrible story, but you have told it very well. It is the kind of story that people should know. Reading about these ill-fated Latvian people is not enjoyable, but there is a need for this knowledge. Bless Nana for telling. You have made it come to life for us. Good work.

One of the most well-written pieces I have read on FanStory. Your story is absorbing, compelling, horrifying, fascinating, and incredibly well done. You wrote this story with such clarity, it was like watching a movie. I could feel the desperation and the fear, and within a few seconds into it I already loathed the unthinking cruelty of the Russian soldiers. If you have more bits of stories from your mother that you can expand into fictionalized works, I hope you put them into book form. You truly have talent.
I grew up in a neighborhood filled with older people who had escaped eastern Europe and remembered the war years all too clearly. Most wanted to put it all behind them, not even teaching their children the language of the 'old country'. These stories are meant to be shared.
Not a nit to pick. Excellent work.

Thank you so much for the endorsement and all the stars.

In my case, my mother wanted me to learn the language, become Latvian, but she wanted a purified version and rarely spoke about the horrors. I found out that even the Latvians weren't so 'good.'

Even though you have stated fiction, but for one incident, this story is unfortunately, all to real. Many young women like Iiga were raped, their families slaughtered, and only the strongest survived. You have done a masterful job with realism . The one true incident fit with the story as all seemed real. How can people be so cruel? Man's inhumanity to man gets my blood boiling.

This scene continues to play out everywhere and we see it on the newsreels each night, but have become less sensitized, feeling impotent and so block it out. Really, what else can most people do?

Such a sad story of a truly horrific time. The scenes in the car and shed were clearly described without being overly graphic. I loved the end of the story that showed how her life went on and she eventually found happiness. Even in the most desperate of times, there is hope. Well done!

You captured the raw desperation that these survivors had. It is true in war all things are permissible. I got chills as the part of the baby and its mother was told. Sacrifice and horror blended well here. Only one spag that I saw. Disgusted my her ...should be disgusted by her... Other than that it was chilling and very real. Nicely done.

Good attention grabbing introduction. Good transition between events. This piece is very graphic as I can picture the horrendous acts in my mind. Good character balance. Smooth dialogue. Steady pace leading to me what I think is a good conclusion.

Dreadful times which are good to be remembered lest we forget what people suffered to gain freedom. Vividly written and with good use of language. Your descriptions and dialogue were good and it was an effective story. Faye
