Thanks very much for taking the time to do that. This story was highly meaningful to me and after posting, I put even more work into the story and entered it in a major contest. I hope the judges agree with you. Thanks.

Best wishes for the upcoming major contest. That's exciting. Oh and please excuse my typos. Wrote that w/o my glasses on. Geez!

Superb story & storytelling . . . excellent writing . . . & congrats on winning story of the month & deservedly so. Your story is so much more powerful & realistically told than the typical entries in such a contest as this. You told of atrocities without using purple prose & the stark style is far more intensely felt by the reader. Thanks for sharing.

I love the picture. I love the story. We all need to be reminded of the horrors of war. It is still happening in different corners of the world. It needs to be stopped before all humans can call themselves humane. Great work. Good luck with the contest.

Sincere thanks. We only need to turn on the news to see evidence in Kiev, the continued tyranny of some leaders and the deaths of people striving for democracy.

This was another sad story of the horrors that people had to endure during the war plagued countries. It is hard to believe some of the stories we read, because they are true. Thanks so much for sharing this story.

Powerful, powerful stuff, Ingrid. One can only hope to know why she was the recipient of the kindness and not the others. I know similar true stories. I especially enjoyed how you did the ending, making it even more powerful. Best of luck in the contest. Be well. Larry

Thanks so much for the kind words and the star power. This was extremely hard to write and I think that pain made me realize it was working.

Mankind has nothing to fear but itself. I sure hoped this was a bit detailed in a few chapters from the point she made it to Riga onwards...Could be a great semi biographical novel...

Glad I had a six, had to read it. The detail and imagery blew me away. a smooth narrative that takes the reader step by step through the horrors of mans inhumanity to his fellows. The slaughter of the innocent cannot be called war.

This most definitely deserves a 6 and yet I am out. This is such a sad, powerful story that although hard to envision, is one we much never forget. You have done a superb job with this and I wish you all the best in this contest.

I was going to save this and enter it elsewhere but the contest required another 800 words and when I tried to write them I began to have tremors...I couldn't.

Hi Ingrid,
you totally deserve that lion's head on the bottom of your profile. As horrific as this story was, it was a polished write, no doubt about it. Just don't want to imagine human beings treating each other that way; war or not... I think war just gives an excuse for a rapist or a murderer to have free rein, of what they would probably do anyway if the opportunity arose. Can't sing your praises enough my talented friend... this was a superb write... even to the little touch at the end with the young girl speaking as a grandmother from the safe country she obviously made it to... yeah, loved it.
