This is a very interesting story. The characters are believable. The dialogue sounds natural. The conflict is one that most can relate to.

Wow, this was a powerful piece of writing. It threw me at first that it was the mother who came in slamming the door, it sounds like a teenage girl. Well written.

Wow! Thank you!!!! That was exactly what I was going for... to make the reader think it was a teenage girl. I was trying to show the similarities of the mom raising a child, then the roles changing, and the child raising the mom. I'm so glad you saw that.
Thank you so much for reading my story!

I am taking an old guy out today who needs to get respite from his wife's Alzheimer's. He is tragically sad as he watches his wife slip away, piece by piece. I think you have nailed the emotions and actions associated with this modern day tragedy being played out in the lives of so many people now. You've built a great narrative around the premise and I loved the positive, spiritual ending which gives all some hope. But, unfortunately, this is storytelling. My neighbour struggles daily with the decision about the nursing home.

My heart goes out to your neighbor... I wish everyone could have the happy ending, but you're right, this is just a story and not all endings play out this well. Please give my best to your neighbor.

this is an emotionally charged story that is a true-life issue for the sandwich generation. you gave your story a positive ending--but that it be so in many families. Guilt plays a huge role in these decisions, even though it's the right thing to do.

Well written and an excellent response to the prompt.

This really is such a sensitive issue... I gave it a somewhat positive ending because I wish it could always be like that. Unfortunately, that isn't usually the case. Thank you so much for your review and the kind words.

I love the story. Her father never really left. He is in the hearts of all who loved him. No one wants to see a parent in a nursing home. But sometimes it is best. Great work. Good luck with the contest.

It is never easy or pleasant to do the hardest things in life that will only bring more heartache and pain to those involved
Letting go and believing you are doing the best for both parties leaves a bitter-sweet feelings that stay with you until you release her into God's arms for His safe and comforting arms.

This was a very heart touching story. The story reads well. You could feel Abby's anguish in this story. I could also feel the relief she felt when her mother acknowledge where she needed to be. Well written.

A very sad tale of the anguish experienced by a child/caretaker of an Alzheimer-afflicted mother. Mary's few moments of lucidity will relieve the protagonist of much of her guilt in moving Mary to a nursing home. Everyone should acknowledge they have limits - but it's hard not to feel guilt for not being super-human. An excellent portrayal of this special family dynamic. :) nancy

Hi,
This is a very well-written story, one that shares the loss, guilt and burden of caring for an elderly parent. Abby is sandwiched between her feelings of remorse and the overwhelming load of caring for her mother and children. This is a common situation many of us face as our parents age and we're responsible for our children.
Best of luck in the contest.
Bye
Rosalyne :)

I guess it all comes down to whether or not you believe in miracles. And this short story makes you WANT to. I really like how the scene opens with Mary's yelling and Abby looking at her father's picture and crying with guilt. You slowly give us the back story so we understand WHY Mary acts as she does and WHY Abby is under so much stress. The sudden change in Mary's behavior and attitude--well, we want to believe Dad did get through to her. Very poignant and a good read.
