I relished your parody and update of the traditional tale, plus the new, personalized picture. The "five-day-old-snow" seems to hit close to home. Thanks for the reminder about the true meaning of this day too.
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!" I got my husband a "dud" of present--a vacuum cleaner--please don't tell!! Smiles across the miles- Joan

Thanks so much, Joan - newfallen snow is indeed quite gorgeous, but few poets seem to remember how absolutely ugly old snow can be LOL Sawyer will be so jealous of your husband. His toy hand-me-down vacuum complete with sound effects is his favorite toy even though Miranda tells me Nora never gave it the time of day when it was hers. LOL Merry Christmas!! Brooke

I was born in Brooklyn and remember ugly slush. I'll tell Bob Sawyer's story when he groans about his gift--because he'll only see work written all over it! At least Sawyer didn't find the box more interesting than the present, the way many kids do. I so enjoy your grandchild vicariously. More merry, merry- Joan

This was a beautiful holiday write, Brooke, and I loved the play on the original tune. Too often we don't truly appreciate what we have, and this is such an excellent reminder to take a step back and really consider how lucky we are. Thanks so much for sharing this important message, and a very Merry Christmas to you, Sawyer and the rest of your family =D

Oh Brooke, there's too much truth in this fabulous poem! We are such a wasteful society! What a unique way of bringing this issue to light; I wonder how many homeless in Toronto are wandering today, trying to stay warm...sigh...

You bring your marvelous talent to a topic that can't be protested enough, in my opinion.

Ah, Brooke, you are so savvy, and so true to your ideals.
And you give me an idea. What if the day after Christmas was designated another kind of giving day? I day when make room for the new by donating an 'equal' amount. How many sweaters can our drawers hold?
I think this would make the day after Christmas another holiday.

Sorry. Just riffing off your poem, Brooke. A different kind of review, but valid.

The Brits have their Boxing Day. Why can't we have a Give Back Day?

The merriest of Christmases to you.

Peace, Lee

I love your idea, Lee. In my church we work with an alternative gifts non profit organization because I firmly believe most middle class people own collections of excess ties and scarves and sweaters simply because their relatives are obliged to put something into a wrapped box. The Alternative Gifts organization has a brochure of three dozen gifts from around the world which one can donate in the recipient's name - so you can send eyeglass es to Haiti or a bicycle to Cambodia or a shelf of food to Appalachia, and you can do it in various amounts, so some of the gifts cost as little as five dollars while others can cost a few hundred. I bet you that most uncles can't remember who the hell gave them a red tie last year or that they even got a red tie last year, but they'll for sure remember who gave a farming family three egg-laying hens in their name. Give Back day would be another fine tradition in this spirit :-) Merry Christmas, Lee. Sending you love and a set of Christmas hugs. Brooke

Wonderfully written Brooke, the sequence of the story was excellent. The rhyme was spot on and the story had a nice, simple motion to it.
A fun read on Christmas morning sipping my cup-a-joe.
Merry Christmas ... John

One of my favorite poems ever. Besides being a perfectly written poem, the message hits straight to my heart. I reserved a spot in this contest, but won't have time to write today. I will review them all, but this will be hard to beat! Merry Christmas, Brooke. I hope you're getting to spend it with your daughter and granddaughter.

Thanks so much, Dusty, for that generous review and Merry Christmas to you. I spent a week with my daughter and grandson two weeks ago. Unfortunately, they are 3000 miles away, so today will just be Christmas by phone and facebook :-) Brooke

I have no sixes left to give you, but wanted to tell you what a truth you have told. Your story made me smile and the message is clear, old things from us, our new treasures to them. Brooke, this is one of the best Christmas stories I have read, and shows the heart of the writer. I can only say, my friend, it is a blessing to know you, and I too have stuff to add to his cart. God Bless you and your family this season, and may your stories always teach and inspire. Merry Christmas, Brooke, to you and to your precious family. Blessings

Just brilliant, I love every line and every rhyming couplet.
It really is a good feeling when you give to somebody who need it. We give ours to charity shops. My sister goes out at night to feed the homeless, this is a sad situation too.

A great poem Brooke with fabulous word choices that brings it to a wonderful conclusion about the real meaning of Christmas.

So well written, Mary

Nice photo to complement this poem. I can see what it was inspired by. That also did not have Jesus in it. Lovely AABB rhyme. Best wishes for the contest.
