Wow what a way to go. That is so dishartening.
I am a surgical nurse by trade but am too old to hire on in that trade. So what do I do? Last year I had to become a security guard to pay the bills. Cats have to eat anx I refuse to eat them

What kind of a-hole would steal a bunch of birds? I am sorry for your loss, not just the birds but really, what pretty much was your baby, living on your own terms. I hope the thief had his eyes pecked out. Great poem at the end too.

Your birds were your dream. You had it. Yes, it was destroyed. But you did it. You and your wife made life happier for birds and a lot of people. It was hard to give up but you have a lot of talents. You have more than one dream. Luckily you still keep following those dreams. Great work.

It was harder on Donna. I tend to move on to the next chapter. But, this was a while ago now. So, life goes on. Still following those dreams as you say, mikey

Please tell me you had insurance to cover some of the loss!
Who on earth would steal birds-- was it suppose to be a kind act to let them free? I feel so bad for you especially since the crook was freed. Small wonder you're bitter. Very well told, Mikey. I love the info on the birds. It was a miracle that the two birds you most cared about were saved.

no. the insurance is too espensive and doesn't pay anyway. They find a cheap price for a particular bird and base settlements on that. A lousy macaw like ours is worth about five hundred bucks. A perfect one that is tame and talks about three thousand. But, they look alike and the insurance could care less. The crook was smart to leave the country. Well, all in the past. We still have the macaw Seemore. He is a bad dude. A unique personality for a bird. He is ready to rumble. Most birds would hide in the corner and get stolen. He is ready to throw down! My little grey, Doc, died a couple months ago. She was ancient. I still miss her. It would have destroyed Donna to lose Seemore after losing her other bird just a few months before. They stole for the money. Big bucks in birds. Probably took them out of state. A black cockatoo sells for thirty grand. lots of smuggling, second to drugs money wise. Australia banned exports of all animals in the late eighties. so, lots of smuggling from there. mikey

Wow! I never knew birds were so valuable.
Thirty grand! Why? For breeding purposes? What can a bird contribute to the environment to make it so valuable?

I feel very bad for you when you had a thriving business with no competition. I am sure you were devastated by the loss of those beautiful unique birds. I guess life is about getting knocked down and then climbing back up again, and you did. Now you are writing again and proficiently, so you have to pat yourself on the back for the achievement. I liked the line about the "shy little boy"! As usual a well-written commentary about your earlier life and a nice poem to go with it. Faye

Thank you very much. It still affects Donna somewhat to this day. I've always been a move on to the next thing kind of guy. But, we are doing pretty well. We still have Seemore the macaw. He is a pain, but Donna loves him so, I know he isn't going anywhere. hahaha. mikey

Hi Mikey,
This is a well-written chapter and very sad. The senseless theft of your birds is so mean and cruel. You and your wife, Donna, raised and treated them with such a gentle hand and so much love. To walk into the store and see such malice is something one will never forget. I was relieved to read that Donna's bird awaited your arrival.
Bye
Rosalyne :)

It would've been more than she could handle having lost her other bird not that much time before. Well, we still have him and all is well now. Glad you liked this. Thank you, mikey

I do hope you plan to publish this, I know I would stand in the rain all night just to get a copy...then send it to you to get it signed. This is such a informative and sad chapter. I too, do not trust the justice system. Strange name for it when so seldom justice is served. Excellent work with this one. It brought tears to my eyes.

You are so sweet to say that. I don't have any idea how to go about publishing anything. But, I shall look into it. I so appreciate your encouragement it means a lot to me. Justice will be mine the next time or if it happens to a friend. Thank you so much, mikey

There are few things I can tolerate. If someone steals from me, that is not one of them. One works so hard to acquire something and then a good for nothing will come around and just take it. It really makes me angry that in most of these cases the justice system actually favors the criminals. Thanks for another great read, Mike.

I'm with you. I pretty much will give someone almost anything they ask for. Just don't steal it. I should've taken care of the justice myself. The system did nothing. mikey
