Common sense. By it's purest definition, it is the abilities to think, act and behave in reasonable ways to reach logical conclusions and make sound decisions, formulate sound, prudent judgment based upon simple perceptions of the situations or facts.

Animals are not wired as we are. The main difference is the presence of a soul. Animals have no soul, no "spiritual nor moral" compass which guides them. Human beings tend to internalize things and complicate things by thinking too much. Animals do not have mental disorders like people do. Animals respond well to behavioral interventions (like food as a reward) and humans? Not so much. The term Animal as described in the dictionary means a living organism other than humans which feeds and usually has sense organs and a nervous system and can move. Animals include a vast majority of species. Humans belong to Homo Sapiens and are bipedal species.

Animals would normally only include multi cells and complex organisms. Organisms like the bacteria will not be included in the animal kingdom. In most animals the dietary habits are very limited which means that they would either be vegetarians or non-vegetarians. Humans, on the other hand, are omnivorous, consuming vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods alike.

Animals cannot talk, although they do communicate with each other. In some species that the skills have been found these are very basic and undeveloped. Humans, on the other hand, are the only known species with highly developed communication skills.

Animals merely feed to survive and reproduce. They have not developed skills that go beyond their survival needs. Humans are known for their curiosity to understand and to try and influence and change their environments. It is this curiosity in the Humans that has lead to the development of advanced tools, technology and science. The human behavior is much different from the animals as we have set purposes in life that go beyond the survival needs of day today.

Humans are highly social beings and live in large colonies. Homo Sapiens are the only known species that has the ability to domesticate animals and engage in agriculture. With the invention of advanced techniques and technology the Humans have been able to colonize all the continents. Through this colonization, humans have infringed on the land where these animals once survived and created a problem of existence for them.

Often times, Humans emulate animals (sheep in wolves clothing, if you will), while with animals, what you see is quite often what you get.

Nicely done, Cogitator.

An essayist who can draw upon great examples to bolster his point of view always projects a thought subject. You've done that and it enhances the essay.

your writing is top notch without any slip in either technique or spag.

Where I believe it gets diluted is in the ethereal argument. Some people's instinct is to kill the guy who cuts him off in traffic and one could argue that his alpha position is threatened, therefore it makes perfect sense to destroy this life form.

Using animal instincts, some people when threatened might just roll over and play dead, instinctively knowing that if the predator believes they have expired, their survival will be ensured by their ruse.

My point is that which instinct should we rely on? There is a wake up call here issued by the writer, but I'm not convinced that following that baser survival tool alone serves anyone except one life form. Without some intellectual thought, it is completely abandoning our humanity and using only our animal 'common sense.'.

Holy shit. I must say, I am extremely impressed by this write. It is really great to see other people willing to challenge themselves and others thinking. The inclusion of famous quotes was excellent in enforcing your points and the final line rings out with clarity. If you have some time, please check out my essay The Gods of the Gaps. It's a chapter in my book The Other Pen Dragon. I think you'd really enjoy it. Really fantastic work here, thanks for sharing.

Do you realise that, throughout this essay, you scream for us to WAKE UP! in tandem with condemning the mass populace as halfwits that deserve ill fate? Talk about kill a following - who in their good mind would even want to wake up to this? Sorry, but while I fully realised what this was reaching for, I think the positives were overrun by the aggression and seething, underlying contempt for - by your own words - your audience: the masses.

A few examples:

--the superior use of "wise", and 'those who are "in the know"', plus "Let them think they are smart"
--"They do not even deserve pity"
"The great mass of uneducated, illiterate, and ignorant people roaming the planet are meant to be used, abused and scammed. Let them think they are smart and then, squash them"
--*the best examples of ways to tame the ignorant and make them do the bidding of those who are "in the know."
--" give them thoughts that appear to make sense"
--" Make them feel "guilty" for not knowing"

It has a distasteful, familiar ring to it all. I think your approach to your ideas in this essay was all wrong on a productive level. For me, it was unsuccessful. Few will listen to someone that they feel disrespects them.

Thanks for the comments. Methinks you took this piece way too personally...John

Mefinks no easy outs. I took this as presented -- to the masses on a global site. Assuming it won't be taken personally by many regardless, designed as it is, isn't Common Sense to me. Subjectivity/Objectivity. 'Oneness'. You're welcome.

Wow. You make some pretty sweeping statements here--not all of which I believe. This is a problem with most 'thoughtful discourse'. If one of your 'truths' doesn't jibe with my version of the 'truth' I can no longer find your platform supportable.
I'm not saying you are wrong, merely that my experience is different from yours, so some of your conclusions don't match mine.
But thank you for the intellectual stimulus.

Peace, Lee

Hello Cogitator,
Marvelous piece of Non Fiction!
It beautifully defines and depicts the importance of commonsense in our life. It's the quality which distinguishes human beings from all other creatures and needs to be developed to lead a better/successful life.
Wording is simple, impressive and perfectly matching the theme.
Spontaneous and captivating flow from top to bottom.
Meaningful Quotations of the great men make it more interesting.
The most striking words are:
"Common sense is truth. Religion is lies. Politics is lies. Only YOU create your future from your base of understanding. The more you understand, the better your future."
Superb!

I agree that we are in tune to truth, and truth is that we are created by God who sent his son to die for us. That is the truth. Good write, lot to consider.

Wow, your essay covers a wide range and makes a lot of assumptions, such as those in power somehow have a higher level of intelligence. I tend to believe some are like animals that rely on their instinct to govern their lives. These sorts tend to be wily and cunning and prey on the weak, which take no educational skills. True, too many of the populace seem satisfied to be led around without putting forth the effort to get beyond their seemingly satisfied state. I believe everyone should strive to find that sacred part of self, because only then will he or she be able to connect with a higher power, thus their higher self. It is then he or she will reach a higher state of enlightenment. You mention Moody Bible Institute radio - I've never heard of it, but if it's like most religious talking heads, they've blurred the lines of religion and politics to the point that both are useless, and are steeped in hatred and bigotry. I agree with your approach to common sense being truth; however, it's how one reaches it that there's a divergence for me. Overall, it's not often I've read such an original piece on fanstory and for that, thanks for an enjoyable read.

Thank you... No matter what point of view we adopt, the view will not change its nature because of us. Any discussion of merit should expand the view of the parties involved. I simply attempt to broaden the view...John

To each his own. Your writing is well thought out, though I believe the message to be flawed. Still, I acknowledge your right to believe as you will. As for me, I'm no lamb going to slaughter. I think for myself and take responsibility for my own actions. If that weren't true, I would simply jump on whatever bandwagon appealed to me and served my own motives at the time. It takes a lot more strength and a thicker skin than you know, to stand on your faith as a Christian, in the world we live in. I do so without apology. I have no fear of death, but I do fear what I see happening in our government today.
A little common sense mixed with a true, (not contrived to pull a few more votes) sense of faith (not religion) would be both refreshing and effective. I haven't given up hope, but it is a daunting task at hand.

What really separates us all is our ability to communicate our true level of understanding. Belief and faith are substitutes for knowledge and experience. There is no need for faith when we KNOW. Thanks,,,John
reply by emjaihammond on 09-Dec-2013
The problem is, my experience in life has taught me that my faith is true and my belief is well founded. Knowledge and education come in many forms and we find it in both the classroom and in the people and the world around us. You can have both faith and knowledge. Please forgive my persistence. I don't usually bother to argue my point on fanstory. People have a right to their opinion and you shared yours in a well written piece. I only felt I needed to defend people who of faith. Some have painted us with all with the same brush, and I believe that is what non-believers resent when it has been done to them. I'll stop now. LOL It's time for me to move on. No hard feelings, just sharing what I know.

Your essay is very well written and your position on religion and politics clearly explained. I wouldn't have always agreed, but I do today - every word. Yes, common sense are the right words. :-)
