Thanks, songbyrd. Seems the older we get, the more we go back in time.

This brought back memories of my own mother. I got much the same advice. But my mother never came up with anything as simple and impressive as, "Your body is a temple. Be careful who or what you let in." That is a gem. Great piece. I enjoyed.

Thanks ever so much, Liz, for the exceptional rating. I don't know where my mother came up with that. She did a lot of metaphysical reading. Emmett Fox and Edgar Cayce being her favorites. A couple of her sage lines were inspired by their works.

Bravo, Mrs. Coupled with my last name. I enjoyed every word of your 'Mother lessons'. In fact, I think it is one of my favorites. We always hope that the time and love we have given our children will pay off for them. That we somehow have influenced them for good as they go through this earthly journey, called Life. Well done, Carolyn

Thanks, Carolyn. I remember one lesson my daughter taught me when she wanted to be a singer or actress:
    Never help the competition. Sigh...

Now you've got me wondering what the answer is. Shame on you! Come on, you can confess it to an ex Navy nun. Sage advice all of it and I heard it too. I wonder what advice mothers give their children these days.

That would be interesting. Ask your students. It would make a great essay topic. My answer-hubby's love supercedes mine and that's a good thing. :-)

Very nice memoir, Shari. I wonder what you thought your kids would remember from the many valuable lessons you gave them? It's always a surprise to see what people pick up on when we are trying to teach, is it not? I enjoyed this. Dennis

Thanks for the six, Dennis. My mother always seemed to know the right thing to say. It scared me. I never thought I would be as wise as she.

I was so very surprised at how much of this jumped off the page at me. My family were nutty as fruitcakes. But, they still taught me every single one of those things. Every point you mentioned hurled me back in time and I could hear them telling me those words. And you are so on the money, they did stick. Your humor is such an asset in your writing. It keeps the reader fully engaged and alert. So perfectly written and presented. Another great writing lesson. A very enjoyable piece. Damn it! It is better than mine too!! Hahaha! mikey

Interesting. Another example of how things are passed on from generation to generation. I suspect you're at least thirty years younger than I.

Dear Shari,
I loved this one. Great wisdom passing down through the ages. I hope my kids at some point can see the messages on the wall for themselves.
I also like this sense of laughter. Sometimes that is the greatest gift to give and receive, certainly in my home it is.
Skillfully penned, smooth read and a great submission.
Thanks for sharing it and good luck.
Maureen

Thanks for reviewing, Maureen. My mother was so wise that I wondered if I could do as good a job.

I think this is one of the best pieces you've written, probably because it's so personal. It reminded me of my mom and then brought me forward into the things we say to our own children and how important they are in formulating their lives.

Loved the red highlighting.

So ture, Spit, and very well said, all of it.

I recall more of the lessons my Grandma Cook imparted upon me more than I do my own parents. I've never understood quite why, really. My folks were, and still are, very upstanding, responsible people.

Mamma Cook always told me, Always sweep off your own back porch before telling someone else how dirty theirs is.". It was usually after she'd catch me speaking badly about someone, or gossiping. I never fully understood what she meant at the time, but I certainly do now. It's a rule I reiterate to my own children today.

Sounds like you grew up in a very strict, but loving environment. Your mother sounds like a very wise woman. She seemed to have certainly taught you well.

Great work. I hope you do well in the contest with it...

Thanks, Dean, for sharing your story. I never heard it put that way. My mother and I were soulmates and I expect we'll be together in the next lifetime.

The first part of your story made me laugh out loud! My Heavens!!!??? Are we sisters?? That is exactly what my other did and said. The difference is the wisdom you quote at the end of the story is spot on and NOT what my mother would have said.
I love the quote from your daughter: "always look for bargains on big purchases" - Great advice that I would have passed down to a daughter. The advice about one partner loving another better made me wonder about your mother's marriage - I wondered which person she was refering to. I enjoyed your story, the comments, and the incredible similarity parents share in advising their progeny. Thank you!

Loved your detailed review. Looks as if generations think alike. I hate to think of the advice given to teens nowadays considering the skimpy outfits they wear. Yes, my father loved more deeply than mother. Same with my marriage and my daughter's. To my mind, that's the way it should be. Not sure what the balance is in son's marriage, but I think he too loves deeper.
