That's different from you, Dean. Are you becoming an optimist? Lol.
The funeral parlor was packed to (remove over )capacity.
"My dear sir, I can not (cannot)accept this," the grieving widow exclaimed.
The widow snuggled her children in close to her|(remove ,) as tears streamed down her face.

Hah ha, I seriously hope not, JM! Just thinking about how lucky I am, personally, at having such a great support system around me. Friends like yourself really help, too...;D

All those errors have been addressed. Thanks for the comments, and the helpful review!

True friends, those who act as well as talk, are a wonderful blessing. Your story doesn't intimate that any of the deceased's friends were going to support the widow and orphans, however. That is an important point to make. Otherwise, the competitor's action looks more generous than anyone else's. :) nancy

I wish I had a sixth star left for this clever story which has a wonderful fable feel to it. You convey an important message with your own unique and entertaining style. A joy to read.

Kindest of regards,

Julie :-)

Yep, I agree. Take comfort in the warmth of family and forget about Black Friday- it may lead to a box. Have to admit though, I think the corpses grin was a bit creepy. Maybe I'm just disposed to horror, but I was waiting for fangs ( which I will have if my son asks for an x-box 1 one more time).

Hah, I am with you on the X-Box thing, my friend! My son's driving me crazy about it, too. What happened to the popularity of PlayStation? Seems as if it's taken a back seat, even with the new PS4 coming out.

Thanks for the read & review, much appreciated!

A delightful read! Thought I would switch over to the story side of FS and this was a wonderful way to start. Loved the author's note as well. Too much emphasis is placed upon things these days. Your story is a good reminder of what is important.

Dean, I grew up in Massillon during the 50's and 60's. We had much less than other families had. I was never envious of these people. I had never went to bed hungry, I just never had the best in clothes. But, what I did have was my parents and their love and the safety they gave me and my siblings.

This is a great write depicting how rich people tend to look down their noses at we poor. Excellent piece of writing dean,,,,,,,,Jim

Short but powerful. I really was enchanted from start to end. This reminded me a bit of It's a Wonderful Life. The meaning or moral was not overplayed, which I thought was critical. Let the characters do the talking, or should we say the smile?

Hello, Dean,
Truer words were never spoken, but still we need to be reminded at times. This was the perfect vehicle, in which to bring the message home. Your theme definitely brought a meaningful, insightful, and seasonal feel to the piece. I enjoyed the read, my friend, thanks, Bill

Absolutely right,Dean. I always preach to anyone within my emotional and social circumference, especially those closest to me, that the simplest things are the most important.

Funny you should have said that. Shows you are a man of good heart, so full respects to you and your family from this day on.....and if I don't get the chance again; have a wonderful Christmas to all of you.

The tale of the old man has many meanings, let us only hope that the most important one is learned from this.

Its the simplest that matters.

Good write, Dean

RG

Hi Dean,
A nice parable, and timely too with Christmas fast approaching. It reminded me of George Bailey's experience in 1946 "It's A Wonderful Life". Directed by Frank Capra, Jimmy Stewart starred as poor old George Bailey, who lamented over lost dreams and fretted over nickels and dimes. He learned that he was the richest man in town because he had friends. In your story, Mr Marlowe was the richest man in his town because he (and his wife) measured wealth by friendships instead of money, like his competitor.
One minor spot to consider,

"The store was near bankruptcy at the time of the man's death, and his properties were seized after his death due to unpaid income taxes and city tax."
I suggest,
(The store was near bankruptcy, and his properties were seized after his death due to unpaid taxes.)

I'll remember your story when I'm watching "It's A Wonderful Life" in a few weeks.

Thanks for sharing!
cheers,
Kimbob
