Excellent piece. I like this poem, I have always thought about that very subject, how does the animal feel about doing this every day? Same thing about the little ponies that are often in parking lots for children to ride, that is fine for the child, but how does the pony feel. I would think they would learn to hate children. I hope not.

Many thanks, ELumpkins, for your kind review! There is some great work being done in elephant sanctuaries up in Thailand but until the mass of visiting tourists transfer their allegiance to these the almighty tourist dollar will continue to sustain the elephant trekking business. It is a matter of re-education largely. That is one of the reasons my daughter was up there.

What a sorrowful pantoum, and so well said! Ganesh must shed a tear. Your poem resonates with me and the timing of it is amazing, as we (here in Toronto) Have just shipped three 'captivity' elephants to California to begin a new life on a reserve there to get them out of this cold weather (finally)!

Hi Tony,

This is a creative poem and one that is so sad. You have chosen the perfect words to describe the sorrow of this elephant whose life is to give rides to tourists. Well done....chey

OH Tony, This is so sad....I saw a show once on this married couple who bought a lot off land... They made it fore elephants that needed a home...one came in and it kept making loud noises to another ...they didn't know what was going on...they checked into the life of them and found out they were together in a circus...they were friends...they put them together on the land and the people said them could never separate them...Very well said and very well written...Luff Linda xoox

so terrible what people do to animals, with no feeling or empathy. Your poem is a sad reminder of what goes on in this world.
Great picture. This is how animals should live.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

Perfect picture selection segues directly into your poem about a captured elephant used to make money by carrying tourists on their backs. Too many animals have been taken from the wild and the freedom they crave, to slave for man.

Wow, what a sad and meaningful piece this is. It voices the sorrow I, too, feel for animals and when they are captured or not treated in the right manner. I love the message here, and you wove your words so captivatingly at the same time. Wonderful job. Keep writing!-Lily

Your Pantoum is very touching, as it tells of the plight of the servile elephant, that is used for entertainment. In this case, it's become a tourist ride.

Lovely form, perfect rhyme and even tempo.

Howdahstardly!, indeed, tf! Love the wordplay!

Love the clever reference, to the elephant God!

You're becoming quite a master at this form, my friend!

An interesting version of the pantoum rendered on the feelings of an elephant to her fate, but what fun for children who would be impressed by her size and nature. In the wild she may be killed as so many have been slaughtered in Africa for their tusks. I understand your feelings, but even in Asia. S.E. Asia they may earn their keep ( and the wild ones are in their decrease as man reduces their natural habitats). I am not sure what I feel about the way they are tamed.

Many thanks, Alan, for your kind review! The traditional training methods in Thailand leave quite a bit to be desired. However, there is some great work being done in elephant sanctuaries up in Thailand but until the mass of visiting tourists transfer their allegiance to these the almighty tourist dollar will continue to sustain the elephant trekking business. It is a matter of re-education largely. That is one of the reasons my daughter was up there.
