Bravo! Wish I had a six left. This is very much like the ending of "On the Beach", that old nuclear holocaust aftermath movie from 1959. The last remaining people were in Australia and the radiation clouds were heading their way. They all had black capsules to take when the time came, to save them from dying in agony from radiation poisoning. The wife asks, knowing better but hoping, "Does this cure it?" Hubby says, "It ends it." Hard to watch. Depressing movie. I'm sure you saw it.. a real classic.
Anyway, you handled this story with sensitivity. I like how he told her they were out of the pills. This way she'll NEVER know, just fall asleep peacefully. Nice touch.

Thanks so much - yes, that's the way to go, alright - in sleep, not knowing = beats incineration for sure! (LOL)
Thank you for a super review - much appreciated. Uh, I don't think I've seen that movie, but it sure sounds like one I'd like to see.
-
You missed a real classic. By all means rent it. Stars Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins! It was a blockbuster when I was in high school.
-
Oooh, okay - you don't perchance remember the name?
-
On the Beach.
-
Thanks - I will definitely look for it.
-
Hmm, that name sounds familiar, and so does the idea of the clouds. I wonder if I DID see it when I was very young...? No matter, I still want to see it again.
-
You'll need a full box of tissues.
-
Oh. No happy ending, huh?
-
Nope. It's not just the two of them either. Talk about depresssssssssing. Specially to a happy ending gal like me.
-
Okay, I feel sorry for you. Let's just imagine ONE scenario - he's gone to war, and he is sharing his bed (she heard from a mutual friend). That's ONE possibility. Now, imagine others! LOL

I love the orchid-tree metaphor, works perfectly.
So much love for the woman that has been elluding him all his life...and now they will lose it all in this Apocalypse.

Sigh. Yes, yet what better way to go than in sleep, and beside the one you love most in the world...
(Beats incineration. LOL - sorry, but I simply can't allow myself to be TOO much of a 'romantic now can I? LOL)
Thank you ever-so-much, Alex. I'm so glad you liked it, and the metaphor - I was rather pleased with that myself, but then I love orchids...:)

Well, you had me intrigued until the end, and I'm not a fan of science fiction. Your story makes me ask myself what I would do in similar circumstances... I guess it has to happen one day. Your characters were very believable and I'd hope to be something like them. Giddy

Oh Giddy, hopefully Armageddon will never happen, but when the end for us does come, what could be better than to die in our sleep with a loved one beside us?
Many thanks, my friend! I'm so glad you liked it!

This is a very interesting short story that held my attention from the beginning until the end, about the world coming to an end. Nice picture.

This was very well written, and described in easy to read and understand words that easily convey your thoughts and feelings to your readers. The storyline is good, and the dialog is nice too. I enjoyed reading this one.

How sad, Dawn. I guess this is what people do in order to avoid the suffering when the planet is doomed. He loves her so will take the responsibility of helping them die together.

Yes, Ellen, I guess that would be what I'd want when the end of the world was coming in such a horrible way...thank you so much for your generous and kind review, my friend.

Wow what a story. You said it just right girl and made that little old couple look just grand. Sigh it's a wonderful thing to be able to go out together.

Yes, it is the best way - we couldn't ask for a better way, really - to die in our sleep, and with the one we love most in the world. Sigh. You have made me unbelievably overjoyed with your review, Gungalo. When it's someone we admire, it's so special to hear that person likes something you've written so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, my friend!
