This is such a powerful piece. I appreciate you sharing your story with me. I am also glad he didn't follow. This free verse is well written, and really, can't be adequately rated with stars, no matter how many I give. This is and was your life, and I am thankful, as you are, that you made it through to a much better place. Not everyone is as fortunate as you, as you well know. I am proud of you for walking away, and for not repeating the cycle, as many other victims sadly repeat the same circumstances, over and over again. Either, with the same partner, or with a succession of partners. Again, thank you for sharing this bio of your life. It was brave of you to tell us, what others consider secrets too terrible to share. Best wishes to you, my friend.

All is well - has been for over 40 years!
I taught high school level sociology classes for years, and I shared this work with my students when we were studying deviant behavior. Helped a number to realize that hurting another - emotionally or physically - does not equate to love...
I was lucky...and this piece was cathartic for me to write as well...

A great poem, and weren't you so lucky that he did not follow you. Consider yourself having a great escape. As regards to the lady friend not showing any signs of violence, we know how cute these types of men can focus on where it cannot be seen.
He rests his hand upon another's shoulder now
I remember that hand
Yet
She is smiling
She bears no visible scars
She appears content, perhaps even happy
But
I know his secrets
I know his lies
I know what the camera does not capture

This is a great poem for all those people who had to make the split and wondered if it was worth it. When I see my ex-wife I am cold as a stone. I hesitate to think how long I would have allowed her to be a half a wife to me. Thirty years later, she is unchanged. I hope I am.

This is a lovely free verse poem and the story you tell is so moving and will be a familiar story to so many. You never forget a past love and it can stay with you a long time.
