Ha! It's saying I can't give you a six, but it let me! :D

Great rant. I wondered where the heck you were going with this one. The whole trek through the Canadian demographic was so well done, although I don't think we're quite as tolerant as all that. I think Canadians just don't necessarily voice their opinions, but just grumble quietly and get on with their lives.

Hey - that's something to debate at the coffee shop at some point in the future.

For now, I applaud you on a very well written piece, Ingrid. I could never kill squirrels, but they do drive me crazy when they dig up my flower pots. Still, I do admire how they 'use' us and our advancement into the forest to their advantage. Opportunist little buggers, they are!

Nice one, dear lady, nice one.

I'm telling you that ten million of the bastards live in my trees alone. Then there's the hundred thousand or so that come from the Motherland to visit. When the leaves disappear you can see hundreds of their droopy nests in every damn tree on the street. This one 'bad boy' is sitting in a branch, shucking nuts and throwing them on my hot tub. I sweep up, he replaces the crap with new crap.

As for Canadian tolerance, you're right, we are bloody opinionated, but silent, and why tarnish our reputation with our America friends. Thanks for the bouquet of starlight.

An elegant, insightful and delightful rant, my dear. I was hooked from the very beginning and not until when you got to the 'partying on your roof' did I suspect your nemesis was other than human. This was wonderful and flowed expertly. You know how to weave a tale. Your foundation was laid, arguments given and resolution (fantasy or otherwise) was solidly in play.

Vermin. I understand and will come to your 1st squirrel barbecue when it's hosted.

Very well done!

One comment.....God know(s)?

You cover a lot of territory - politics, the Middle East, war, senseless violence just name a few. Gratefully openly squirrels seem to be the object of your greatest passion.

It was definitely a bait and switch post, but just saying that I'm beginning to hate these bloody rodents seemed mundane and people might never believe my distinguishing move from pacifism to war monger without a point of reference.

You did a marvelous job describing your rage before telling us who or what your rage was directed at. I personally have never had a squirrel problem and pray I never do. This was superbly written and a terrific entry for this contest. I sincerely wish you all the best. And I thought the fuzzy little guys were so cute...silly me.

Damn they are cute in the park, not forming armies and assaulting me in my backyard.

I know what you mean. Anti-gun, anti-war, anti-harming living things, I once shot a squirrel (God forgive me!) in an emotional state similar to your own (I was in the emotional state, not the squirrel).

Well how can you be sure the squirrel wasn't in an emotional state? I mean, I've really witnessed how much the grey squirrels hate the black ones, and vice versa.

Maybe their collective hate of humans is the thing that will bring peace in their civilization. LOL.

I hear you loud and clear and I understand your frustration. We had squirrel problems too. My husband went out and bought a bunch of traps and we've been carting them away. I'm not ready to eat them or even kill them but when the cut the vegetables off at the roots and dig holes in the top of my house, they have to go. Your essay is great. You really built to the end when you finally told us what or who your mortal enemies were. I agree with you about war. It makes no sense to me.
